- • Own the architecture, design, and delivery of Remote’s core backend services that power payroll, benefits, and compliance for thousands of globally distributed teams. You will work on systems that process multi-currency transactions, orchestrate tax withholdings across 100+ jurisdictions, and ensure 99.9 % uptime for mission-critical operations.
- • Lead the evolution of our event-driven microservices platform written in Go and TypeScript, deployed on Kubernetes and running in multiple AWS regions. You will introduce new patterns for idempotency, retries, and observability that raise the bar for reliability and developer experience across the entire engineering organization.
- • Collaborate daily with Product Managers, Frontend Engineers, and Compliance Analysts to translate complex regulatory requirements into elegant, scalable code. Your technical decisions will directly influence how quickly Remote can open new markets and how confidently customers can hire talent anywhere on the planet.
- • Drive performance and cost optimizations that keep our infrastructure lean as transaction volume grows 3-4× year-over-year. You will profile databases, tune queries, introduce caching layers, and negotiate with AWS to shave milliseconds off API response times and thousands off monthly cloud spend.
- • Champion security and privacy by design. You will implement fine-grained authorization, encryption at rest and in transit, and automated vulnerability scanning so that sensitive employee data is protected to the highest global standards (SOC 2, ISO 27001, GDPR).
- • Mentor mid-level and junior engineers through pair programming, architecture reviews, and career road-mapping. Your feedback in pull requests and design docs will level-up the whole backend chapter and create a culture of continuous learning.
- • Contribute to Remote’s open-source initiatives and technical blog posts, sharing lessons learned from running distributed systems at scale. You will represent the company at meetups and conferences, attracting top talent and reinforcing our reputation as a thought leader in remote-first engineering.
- • Participate in a lightweight on-call rotation (roughly one week in eight) where you’ll triage alerts, write post-mortems, and automate away toil so that future incidents are shorter and less stressful for everyone involved.
- • Influence the product roadmap by translating customer pain points discovered during incident reviews or support tickets into actionable engineering tasks that prevent recurrence and delight users.
- • Experiment fearlessly with new technologies—whether that’s evaluating Rust for ultra-high-throughput services or piloting Temporal for durable workflow execution—while maintaining pragmatic trade-offs between innovation and stability.
🎯 Requirements
- • 7+ years of backend engineering experience with at least 3 years designing and operating distributed systems in production
- • Expert-level proficiency in Go or another statically typed language (Java, Kotlin, Rust) and demonstrable success building RESTful or gRPC APIs at scale
- • Deep understanding of relational databases (PostgreSQL), including schema design, query optimization, and transactional consistency patterns
- • Nice-to-have: hands-on experience with Kubernetes, Terraform, and AWS managed services (EKS, RDS, SQS, Lambda)
- • Nice-to-have: prior work on multi-tenant SaaS platforms handling sensitive financial or HR data
