Full Job Description

đź“‹ Description

  • • As a Senior Backend Engineer on the Growth team at Atticus, you will be instrumental in building and maintaining the critical infrastructure that connects marketing, product, and data systems to drive user acquisition and experimentation at scale. Your work directly enables the company’s mission to help millions of Americans in crisis access life-changing government benefits by ensuring the right data flows to the right systems at the right time.
  • • You will own and evolve the data integration infrastructure that powers Atticus’s growth initiatives, including marketing enablement tools, customer communication systems, and experimentation data flows. This involves designing, building, and maintaining reliable pipelines that move data between external tools (like advertising platforms and CRMs) and internal systems, ensuring data integrity, timeliness, and scalability.
  • • Day to day, you will partner closely with product, design, and data teams to translate ambiguous growth hypotheses into well-scoped, executable engineering work. You’ll break down complex, fast-moving priorities into clear technical tasks, advocate for thoughtful tradeoffs between speed and system stability, and document your reasoning to support team alignment and long-term maintainability.
  • • You will work across Atticus’s full product stack as needed, applying a backend-leaning, generalist product engineering mindset. While your focus is on server-side systems, APIs, and data infrastructure, you’ll collaborate broadly to ensure solutions are user-centered and aligned with the end-to-end experience of people seeking aid.
  • • You will help foster a culture of experimentation by building robust, observable systems that allow the team to run tests quickly, measure impact accurately, and learn from both successes and failures. This includes implementing feature flags, monitoring data quality, and ensuring experiments can be rolled out or rolled back safely.
  • • You will contribute to the technical health of the Growth pod by advocating for best practices in observability, testing, and documentation. You’ll help prevent technical debt from accumulating during high-velocity periods by making deliberate, well-justified decisions about when to optimize for speed versus long-term system resilience.
  • • You will serve as a thought partner to product and design, helping shape growth strategy through a technical lens. Your ability to understand both the business goals and the engineering constraints will enable you to propose feasible, impactful solutions that move the needle on key metrics.
  • • Over time, you will deepen your expertise in growth engineering, data infrastructure, and experimentation platforms — becoming a go-to expert on how Atticus scales its user acquisition and engagement efforts. You’ll have the opportunity to influence architectural decisions and mentor others as the team continues to grow.
  • • You will join a mission-driven, B Corporation-certified company that is making measurable social impact. Your work will directly contribute to helping hundreds of thousands of people access over $10 billion in government aid, combining technical challenge with meaningful purpose.

🎯 Requirements

  • • 5+ years of production software engineering experience, with significant time spent in a startup or high-ownership environment where you had end-to-end responsibility for system outcomes.
  • • Proven experience designing, building, or maintaining data and experimentation infrastructure — including marketing data pipelines, automated communication systems, or user identity services — with a strong interest in advancing expertise in this domain.
  • • Demonstrated ability to evaluate technical tradeoffs between development velocity and long-term system health, making principled, documented decisions that balance speed with sustainability.
  • • Experience translating ambiguous product or growth hypotheses into clear, scoped, and actionable engineering work — you thrive in collaborative environments and actively prevent knowledge silos.
  • • A track record of working closely with product managers on user-facing teams, consistently considering the end-user impact of technical decisions, not just implementation details.
  • • Familiarity with the iterative, hypothesis-driven nature of growth and top-of-funnel work, including the willingness to deprioritize or discontinue experiments that do not meet success criteria.

🏖️ Benefits

  • • Comprehensive medical and dental insurance with 100% of employee premiums covered by the company.
  • • Generous time off: 15 vacation days plus approximately 20 paid holidays annually, including a two-week end-of-year closure.
  • • $600 per month internet stipend to support remote work connectivity and productivity.
  • • $1,000 annual stipend for education and training outside of work, encouraging continuous learning and skill development.
  • • Up to $1,200 per year in student loan repayment assistance to help reduce educational debt burden.
  • • Free membership to OneMedical, providing access to high-quality primary care services.
  • • 401(k) retirement plan with optional HSA/FSA accounts for healthcare and dependent care savings.
  • • Opportunity to work with a humble, thoughtful, smart, and fun team of colleagues who are deeply committed to the company’s mission and culture.
