We are seeking a talented Senior Backend Engineer I to contribute to our B2C Services team, a dynamic squad dedicated to revolutionizing the refurbished tech market by delivering unparalleled convenience and value to our customers.
• As a Senior Backend Engineer I, you will be instrumental in the ongoing transformation of our technology stack from a monolithic architecture to a distributed, service-oriented system. This is a unique opportunity to modernize our platform, elevate engineering standards, and build a set of efficient, loosely coupled services that are essential for our continued growth and success.
• Your primary responsibility will be to design, develop, and operate a suite of robust, high-cohesion, low-coupling services. These services will be built with security and privacy by design, ensuring the integrity and confidentiality of our user data while supporting the rapid expansion of our business operations.
• You will operate within an agile "build it and run it" environment, where engineering teams are empowered to take full ownership of their products. This includes not only building and launching new features but also actively monitoring, supporting, and maintaining the services you develop, fostering a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.
• Collaboration is key to our success. You will work closely with all members of your squad, including product managers, designers, and fellow engineers, as well as with the Staff Engineer of your group. Regular bi-monthly rituals with your broader engineering group and the Backend Chapter will provide invaluable opportunities to share your team's successes, learn from the experiences of others, and ensure technical direction is aligned with Back Market's overarching vision.
• A significant part of your role will involve tackling complex technical challenges inherent in migrating from a monolith to microservices. This includes architecting for scalability, ensuring fault tolerance, and optimizing performance across a distributed system. You will contribute to defining best practices for service communication, data management, and inter-service dependencies.
• You will be expected to produce clean, consistent, and well-organized code, adhering to high-quality standards. A passion for creating maintainable and scalable systems is essential, as is a proactive approach to identifying and resolving technical debt.
• As a senior member of the team, you will mentor and guide junior engineers, fostering a collaborative and supportive learning environment. Your expertise will be crucial in code reviews, technical discussions, and problem-solving sessions, helping to elevate the overall technical capabilities of the team.
• You will contribute to the definition and implementation of APIs, ensuring they are well-documented, efficient, and adhere to industry best practices. This includes designing for discoverability, versioning, and backward compatibility.
• You will be involved in the entire lifecycle of service development, from initial concept and design through to deployment, monitoring, and ongoing maintenance. This "you build it, you run it" philosophy ensures a deep understanding of the impact of your work and fosters a sense of ownership.
• You will leverage our modern technology stack, including Python with FastAPI, SQLAlchemy, and Celery, alongside Golang. You will work with data stores like PostgreSQL and Redis, and messaging systems such as Kafka and RabbitMQ, all deployed on Google Cloud Platform (GCP) using Kubernetes (GKE).
• You will actively participate in system design discussions, contributing to architectural decisions that will shape the future of Back Market's B2C services. This includes evaluating new technologies and approaches to solve complex business problems.
• You will ensure that services are built with a strong emphasis on observability, implementing comprehensive logging, metrics, and tracing to enable effective monitoring and troubleshooting using tools like Datadog.
• You will contribute to the continuous improvement of our CI/CD pipelines, utilizing tools like ArgoCD and CircleCI to streamline the deployment process and ensure rapid, reliable releases.
• Given our international team structure, with members located in the US, France, Spain, and Japan, strong English communication skills are essential for seamless collaboration and effective knowledge sharing.
• You will be an advocate for best practices in backend development, including testing strategies, security protocols, and performance optimization techniques, ensuring our services are not only functional but also resilient and secure.
• Your work will directly impact the customer experience by ensuring the reliability, speed, and availability of the services that power our B2C platform, contributing to customer satisfaction and loyalty.
• You will be part of a company that is not just building a successful business but also making a tangible positive impact on the environment by promoting refurbished technology, reducing e-waste, and lowering carbon emissions.

🎯 Requirements

• Proven experience as a Senior Backend Engineer with a strong track record of designing, building, and operating complex distributed systems.
• Proficiency in Python (FastAPI, SQLAlchemy, Celery) and/or Golang, with experience in migrating from monolithic architectures to microservices.
• Solid understanding of relational databases (e.g., PostgreSQL) and NoSQL databases (e.g., Redis), as well as experience with message queues (e.g., Kafka, RabbitMQ).
• Experience with cloud platforms (GCP preferred) and containerization technologies (Docker, Kubernetes).
• Excellent problem-solving skills, a passion for clean code, and a strong understanding of software design principles, security, and privacy by design.
• Strong communication skills in English, both written and verbal, to effectively collaborate with an international, distributed team.
