📋 Description

• **Own the heart of Canopy’s cloud platform.** You will architect, build, and scale the Python services that power tax resolution, practice management, and client collaboration for thousands of accounting professionals. Your code moves millions of dollars in IRS payments and secures highly sensitive financial data—every commit you ship has immediate, real-world impact.
• **Design for 10× growth.** Our customer base has tripled in the last eighteen months and shows no sign of slowing. You will re-imagine existing monoliths into resilient, horizontally-scalable micro-services, select the right data stores (Postgres, DynamoDB, Redis), and introduce event-driven patterns that keep latency under 100 ms even when traffic spikes 5× at quarter-end.
• **Be the go-to authority on Python best practices.** From async FastAPI endpoints to Celery task orchestration and type-hinted domain models, you set the bar for clean, testable code. You will lead code reviews, champion automated testing (pytest, factory-boy), and mentor mid-level engineers through pairing sessions and architecture guilds.
• **Integrate with the financial ecosystem.** You will build secure OAuth 2.0 connections to IRS APIs, banking partners, and payment processors. Deep experience with encryption at rest/in transit, PII tokenization, and SOC-2 controls is essential—our customers trust us with their clients’ most confidential information.
• **Obsess over performance and reliability.** You will instrument services with OpenTelemetry, define SLI/SLOs in Datadog, and create automated canary deploys so new features roll out with zero downtime. When alerts fire, you are the first responder, turning incidents into post-mortems that prevent recurrence.
• **Collaborate across product, design, and customer success.** You will join a fully-remote, product-led squad that ships weekly. Daily stand-ups, bi-weekly demos, and quarterly OKRs keep everyone aligned. You will translate complex tax workflows into elegant APIs and delight accountants who have suffered clunky desktop software for decades.
• **Experiment boldly, measure relentlessly.** We run dozens of A/B tests and feature flags every month. You will design experiment-ready code, analyze results in Amplitude, and iterate until accountants can complete a task in half the clicks. Curiosity and data-driven decisions beat hierarchy every time.
• **Champion a remote-first culture.** We hire the best people regardless of zip code. You will communicate clearly in Slack threads, record concise Loom videos for complex designs, and travel twice a year for high-impact off-sites in the Utah mountains. Time-zone flexibility is expected; synchronous collaboration is valued but not mandatory.
• **Leave the code base better than you found it.** Refactoring is not a side quest—it is core work. You will reduce technical debt, migrate legacy Flask code to FastAPI, and introduce patterns that make onboarding new engineers a one-day affair. Your influence will be felt for years after your first commit.
• **Grow into a technical leadership path.** Within twelve months you can become a Staff Engineer, own an entire product domain, or transition into Engineering Management if people development excites you. We promote from within and fund conference speaking, certifications, and advanced coursework.

🎯 Requirements

• 5+ years shipping production Python services at SaaS scale (FastAPI, Django, or Flask)
• Deep expertise with relational databases (Postgres), query optimization, and schema design
• Proven ability to design secure, RESTful APIs and integrate third-party financial or government services
• Nice-to-have: Async Python (asyncio, Celery, or Dramatiq), Terraform, AWS Lambda, SOC-2 compliance experience
