📋 Description

• As a Senior Backend Engineer on the Representation Pod at Atticus, you will play a pivotal role in transforming how legal aid is delivered to millions of Americans in crisis by building scalable, user-centered backend systems that power tools for attorneys and clients navigating complex government benefits and compensation processes.
• You will own end-to-end backend systems — from architecture and design to implementation and production health — ensuring reliability, scalability, and high performance while collaborating closely with product and design to shape requirements based on real user needs, not just technical specs.
• Day to day, you will design and operate robust APIs and data models, mentor junior engineers in backend best practices, contribute across the stack when needed (including frontend and data systems), and drive 0-to-1 product thinking in a high-impact area where your work directly improves client wellbeing and attorney effectiveness.
• You will partner with product, design, and engineering peers to translate ambiguous problems into clear technical solutions, advocate for architectural excellence, and uphold a high bar for code quality, system observability, and operational excellence in a fast-moving, mission-driven environment.
• The Representation Pod is a cross-functional team building new products from scratch to reimagine legal experiences using modern technology, operating within a VC-backed, B Corp-certified company that has helped hundreds of thousands access over $10B in aid and is scaling rapidly after a successful Series C in 2025.

🎯 Requirements

• 5+ years of experience building production software, including meaningful time at a seed-stage startup or as an early member of a new product team at a later-stage company, with clear evidence of increasing scope and ownership over time
• Experience designing and operating reliable, scalable backend systems and APIs, with a strong focus on data modeling, architecture, and production health
• Proven ability to partner closely with product and design teams to shape user-focused requirements and translate them into technical solutions
• Deep user empathy — consistently considering the real-world impact of technical decisions on clients and attorneys using the products you build
• A track record of mentoring engineers and genuine enthusiasm for helping teammates grow in their technical and professional capabilities
