Full Job Description

📋 Description

  • As a Senior Data Engineer at Carwow Ltd, you will play a pivotal role in empowering data-driven decision-making across the organisation by designing, building, and maintaining scalable, secure, and high-performance data platforms that support analytics, reporting, and machine learning initiatives.
  • Your work will directly impact Carwow’s mission to become the car-changing destination of choice, enabling teams to leverage reliable data from diverse sources — including in-house systems and third-party platforms — to drive product innovation, marketing effectiveness, and operational efficiency at scale.
  • Day to day, you will lead the design, development, and maintenance of robust ETL/ELT data pipelines using Python and dbt-flavoured SQL, ensuring data is ingested, transformed, and made available reliably from sources such as Fivetran into Snowflake and BigQuery warehouses.
  • You will write, optimise, and review advanced SQL queries for complex data extraction and transformation tasks, while implementing and managing sophisticated data workflows and dependencies using Apache Airflow to orchestrate multi-step processes with proper error handling and monitoring.
  • You will design, build, and maintain enterprise-grade data models and warehouses in Snowflake and BigQuery, applying dimensional modelling principles and ensuring data integrity, performance, and cost-efficiency across the data lifecycle.
  • You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams — including Data Analytics, Product, Marketing, and Engineering — to translate business requirements into technical solutions, ensuring data deliverables meet the needs of analysts, data scientists, and stakeholders.
  • You will champion data quality, integrity, and security by implementing automated data validation, monitoring, and alerting mechanisms, and partnering with Security and Legal teams to enforce data masking, PII management, and access control policies in compliance with GDPR and other regulations.
  • You will continuously improve data engineering practices by evaluating and adopting new tools and technologies, optimising infrastructure costs, and driving adoption of best practices in CI/CD, testing, and documentation across the data platform.
  • You will design and maintain automated ML pipelines alongside data scientists to streamline model training, validation, and deployment, enabling faster iteration and productionisation of machine learning models that power recommendation systems, pricing algorithms, and customer insights.
  • You will act as an AI Champion by leveraging generative AI and ML tools to enhance your own productivity and mentoring junior engineers in adopting AI-assisted development practices, fostering a culture of innovation and efficiency.
  • You will lead the implementation of data governance initiatives, including data catalogs, lineage tracking, and metadata management, to ensure data is discoverable, documented, and trusted across the Carwow Group, supporting self-service analytics and regulatory compliance.
  • You will be supported by an Engineering Manager who will guide your career progression, provide regular feedback, and help you grow within Carwow’s well-defined career ladder, ensuring you are fulfilled, challenged, and recognised for your impact.
  • You will have the opportunity to deepen your expertise in modern cloud data platforms, particularly Snowflake and BigQuery, while gaining hands-on experience with GCP’s Vertex AI for ML workflows, and contributing to the strategic direction of data engineering at a fast-growing, innovative European tech company.

🎯 Requirements

  • Significant experience in software or data engineering, preferably in a senior or lead role, with strong expertise in data warehouse design and management using Snowflake or BigQuery.
  • High proficiency in Python and SQL, including advanced querying, optimisation, and scripting for data transformation and pipeline development.
  • Extensive experience building and optimising complex ETL/ELT data pipelines using tools like dbt, Airflow, and Fivetran, with a proven track record of delivering reliable, scalable data solutions.
  • Experience leading and mentoring junior data engineers, guiding teams through complex projects, and contributing to the strategic direction of data engineering practices and technologies.
  • Familiarity with Google Cloud Platform, particularly Vertex AI and its machine learning tools, to support ML pipeline development and AI-driven initiatives.

🏖️ Benefits

  • Fully remote working role with access to offices in London, Munich, Madrid, and Porto, plus 4–5 annual trips to the London office for team bonding and social events.
  • Competitive compensation package including employee-friendly share options, a Royal London pension scheme with up to 5% company contribution, and Vitality private healthcare insurance.
  • Generous time off: 28 days’ holiday increasing to 35 with length of service, plus additional leave for house moves, weddings, fertility treatment, pregnancy loss, and inclusive parental/shared parental leave (up to 20 weeks full pay).
  • Life assurance (4x annual salary), monthly coaching sessions with Spill for mental wellbeing, Bubble childcare support with discounted nanny fees, and a ‘work from abroad for a month’ annual scheme.
  • £500/€550 home office budget, generous learning and development budget, and ongoing support for professional growth and skill development.
