Full Job Description
đź“‹ Description
- • Kraken is at the forefront of the cryptocurrency revolution, dedicated to accelerating global adoption and empowering individuals with financial freedom. We are a mission-focused company with deep crypto convictions, attracting world-class talent to build premium crypto products for a diverse user base, from experienced traders to newcomers. As a fully remote company with a global presence, we foster a culture of innovation, security, and education.
- • You will join a senior team of Database Administrators (DBAs) and Site Reliability Engineers (SREs) responsible for the robust database platform that powers Kraken's most critical services. This team blends deep operational expertise with a platform-centric approach, enabling engineering teams to innovate rapidly while upholding stringent guarantees around performance, security, and reliability.
- • This role is pivotal as Kraken continues its global expansion. Over the next year, the team's focus will be on enhancing operational excellence, evolving our database environments to support significant future scale, and increasing automation and self-service capabilities. This is not a maintenance-focused role; it's about actively shaping the future of our database infrastructure.
- • Your primary responsibilities will include scaling and tuning high-throughput MariaDB clusters to accommodate continued global growth and the launch of new product initiatives. This involves ensuring our database systems can handle increasing loads efficiently and reliably.
- • You will be instrumental in strengthening our high-availability, disaster-recovery, and backup strategies. This includes designing sound solutions and implementing regularly validated procedures to ensure business continuity and data integrity under all circumstances.
- • A key objective is to reduce manual operational work through the development of automation, the improvement of process consistency, and the enablement of safe, low-friction database workflows. This will free up valuable engineering time and reduce the potential for human error.
- • You will enhance database observability and alert quality by championing meaningful metrics, minimizing alert noise, and ensuring operational clarity across all database environments. This proactive approach will allow for quicker identification and resolution of potential issues.
- • Improving database security is paramount. You will achieve this through the implementation of robust access controls, disciplined patching and upgrade practices, and the adoption of secure operational patterns.
- • You will contribute to modern platform initiatives, including the adoption of containerized environments, infrastructure-as-code workflows, and reproducible deployment strategies. This ensures our infrastructure is modern, scalable, and manageable.
- • You will partner closely with service teams to drive better performance patterns, ensure operational readiness for new features, and promote database hygiene across the entire engineering organization. This collaborative approach ensures that database best practices are integrated into the development lifecycle.
- • You will participate in our on-call rotations, with a long-term goal of making on-call predictable and manageable. This will be achieved through high-quality signal generation and preventative engineering efforts, ensuring that incidents are minimized and well-understood.
- • This is a collaborative, high-ownership environment where clarity, rigor, and continuous improvement are core operating principles. If you thrive on building robust distributed systems and designing platforms that empower engineering teams to operate faster and safer by default, you will find a strong and rewarding home at Kraken.
🎯 Requirements
- • 5+ years of experience operating MariaDB/MySQL in high-volume production environments, including tuning, replication, and troubleshooting.
- • Strong understanding of high-availability patterns, distributed database behavior, and practical failure scenarios.
- • Hands-on experience with database proxies or load-balancing layers (e.g., HAProxy, ProxySQL, MaxScale).
- • Practical experience with CI/CD, GitOps, and Infrastructure-as-Code workflows (Terraform experience is ideal).
- • Solid cloud, Linux, and networking fundamentals.
- • Experience with containers and orchestration platforms (e.g., building container images and managing Kubernetes workloads at scale).
- • Strong security instincts around access control, upgrade processes, and safe operational workflows.
- • Observability expertise, including monitoring, alert hygiene, and readiness for incident response.
- • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to partner with stakeholders, negotiate long-term plans, write formal documentation, and tie success to specific metrics and KPIs.
🏖️ Benefits
- • Fully remote work environment, allowing for flexibility and work-life balance.
- • Opportunity to work with cutting-edge blockchain technology and contribute to the future of crypto.
- • Competitive salary and benefits package.
- • Professional development and growth opportunities within a rapidly expanding company.
- • Collaborative and inclusive company culture that values diverse perspectives and meritocracy.
- • Be part of a mission-driven organization focused on financial freedom and inclusion.
