Full Job Description

đź“‹ Description

  • • Design, develop, and maintain embedded software for spacecraft and ground-based systems supporting Kepler’s commercial optical data relay constellation.
  • • Collaborate directly with hardware, systems, and payload teams to define software requirements and ensure seamless integration between onboard systems and ground infrastructure.
  • • Write, test, and debug real-time, low-level C/C++ code optimized for resource-constrained space-grade processors with strict reliability and latency requirements.
  • • Implement and validate communication protocols for secure, high-throughput data relay between satellites and ground stations.
  • • Participate in the full software lifecycle—from requirements analysis and architecture design to deployment, monitoring, and post-launch support for flight software.
  • • Apply rigorous software engineering practices including version control (Git), code reviews, unit testing, and documentation to meet aerospace-grade quality standards.
  • • Contribute to the development of on-orbit compute capabilities and hosted payload software systems that enable advanced space-based data processing.
  • • Troubleshoot and resolve complex software anomalies in simulated and flight environments, including post-launch anomaly resolution for operational satellites.
  • • Work closely with mission operations and telemetry teams to ensure software performance aligns with real-time space communication demands.
  • • Stay current with emerging embedded technologies, radiation-hardened computing standards, and space software best practices to continuously improve system robustness.
  • • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior engineers on embedded software design principles and aerospace development workflows.
  • • Document software architecture, interfaces, and operational procedures in compliance with internal and industry-specific documentation standards.
  • • Support system-level testing, including hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulations and environmental testing for space qualification.
  • • Engage in cross-functional agile sprints with satellite systems, payload, and ground segment teams to deliver incremental software capabilities on schedule.
  • • Contribute to the continuous improvement of software development tools, CI/CD pipelines, and automated test frameworks specific to embedded space systems.
  • • Maintain awareness of spacecraft power, thermal, and memory constraints when designing software solutions for long-duration orbital missions.
  • • Participate in design reviews, risk assessments, and safety analyses for flight-critical software components.
  • • Ensure all software development activities adhere to Kepler’s internal quality assurance and mission assurance protocols.

🎯 Requirements

  • • 5+ years of professional experience in embedded software development
  • • Proficiency in C and C++ for real-time, resource-constrained systems
  • • Experience with microcontrollers and embedded processors used in aerospace or satellite systems
  • • Familiarity with real-time operating systems (RTOS) such as FreeRTOS, VxWorks, or similar
  • • Proven track record of developing flight-certifiable or safety-critical software
  • • Experience with version control (Git), code reviews, and automated testing frameworks

🏖️ Benefits

  • • Competitive compensation with a robust equity plan
  • • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance including dependents
  • • Unlimited vacation and supportive parental leave policy
  • • $1,500 annual professional development fund
  • • Fully stocked Toronto office kitchen with snacks, drinks, and games
  • • Semi-annual company-wide parties and frequent in-office team events

About Kepler Communications Inc.

Kepler Communications Inc. designs, builds, and operates low-Earth-orbit satellites and ground infrastructure to deliver global data connectivity. Founded in 2015 in Toronto, the company provides narrowband and broadband IoT, store-and-forward, and real-time communications services for maritime, defense, agriculture, and research customers. Its growing constellation relays telemetry, imagery, and high-throughput packets across polar and remote regions lacking terrestrial coverage. Kepler handles satellite manufacturing, mission control, spectrum licensing, and end-user terminals, aiming to create an in-space relay network that integrates with existing fiber and 5G systems.
