📋 Description

• Senior Flutter Desktop Engineer at Nest Veterinary Systems Inc. – a foundational, high-agency role shaping the desktop architecture of a mission-critical clinic application used by veterinary practices to improve preventive care compliance and operational efficiency.
• You will own the end-to-end design, development, and optimization of Nest’s Flutter-based desktop application for Windows and macOS, directly impacting how clinics deliver pet care through reliable, performant, and deeply integrated software.
• As a key member of a small, fast-moving engineering team (under ten people), you’ll collaborate closely with leadership and product, enjoying direct influence over technical decisions and daily shipping via GitHub Actions CI/CD.
• Your day-to-day responsibilities include architecting and implementing complex state management using Riverpod, Bloc, or Provider; designing local persistence strategies for unreliable clinic network conditions; and building hardware integrations (printers, scanners, peripherals) via Method Channels or FFI.
• You’ll establish desktop-specific UX patterns across the codebase, including keyboard navigation, context menus, hover states, and memory management, ensuring the application meets the high expectations of professional desktop users.
• You’ll maintain and elevate code quality through rigorous, high-leverage code reviews, promoting modular, extensible, and maintainable practices across the team.
• For performance-critical functions, you’ll have the opportunity to write Rust code — either applying existing skills or learning under mentorship — to optimize rendering, I/O, or system-level operations.
• You’ll continuously improve the desktop experience by addressing platform-specific nuances between Windows and macOS, ensuring consistent behavior, accessibility, and responsiveness.
• Working in a fully remote environment (US or Canada), you’ll contribute to a growing, purpose-driven company that empowers veterinary clinics to focus on patient care rather than administrative burden.
• This role offers the chance to grow as a technical leader in a niche but impactful domain — desktop Flutter engineering — while solving real-world problems that improve animal health outcomes.

🎯 Requirements

• 7+ years of software engineering experience with at least 3 years of production Flutter development.
• Proven experience shipping at least one non-trivial desktop application using Flutter, Electron, Qt, or native frameworks, with deep understanding of desktop UX vs. mobile.
• Strong proficiency in state management (Riverpod, Bloc, or Provider), local persistence strategies, and hardware integration via Method Channels or FFI on Windows and macOS.
• Startup experience with the judgment to balance speed and quality, knowing when to move fast and when to invest in robustness.
• Ability to write clean, modular, extensible code and willingness to engage in low-level debugging (including Rust) to resolve performance issues.
• Familiarity with GitHub Actions for CI/CD and a commitment to daily shipping and rapid iteration.
