Full Job Description
đź“‹ Description
- • Own the front-end architecture for a brand-new, green-field public-sector digital service that will be used by millions of UK citizens. You will decide how the Next.js application is structured, how state is managed, how components are composed, and how the build pipeline delivers safe, repeatable releases.
- • Translate Figma prototypes and GOV.UK Design System patterns into accessible, performant React/TypeScript code. Every line you write is expected to pass WCAG 2.2 AA checks, achieve green Core Web Vitals scores, and be ready for high-volume traffic on day one.
- • Lead the definition and evolution of engineering standards for the entire front-end guild. You will write lightweight Architecture Decision Records (ADRs) that capture why a pattern was chosen, run brown-bag sessions to socialise new techniques, and review pull requests to ensure the bar never drops.
- • Design and implement a pragmatic testing pyramid—unit (Jest + React Testing Library), integration (MSW for API stubs), and end-to-end (Cypress running against preview deployments). You will set coverage targets, coach the team on TDD, and make sure every release has a repeatable safety net.
- • Collaborate daily with product owners, UX researchers, content designers, and back-end engineers in a cross-functional Scrum squad. You will join story refinements, challenge assumptions early, and negotiate scope so that the smallest valuable slice ships first.
- • Champion accessibility as a first-class requirement, not an afterthought. You will pair with QA to run manual screen-reader tests, configure automated a11y linters in CI, and mentor juniors on semantic HTML and keyboard navigation best practices.
- • Optimise performance obsessively: tree-shake aggressively, lazy-load below-the-fold components, and use Next.js ISR/SSR only where it improves real-world metrics. You will monitor Web-Vitals in production and turn data into actionable refactorings.
- • Manage releases like a pro—feature flags, canary deploys, blue/green traffic splits, and instant rollbacks. You will script these workflows in GitHub Actions and document playbooks so the entire team can ship with confidence at 4 pm on a Friday.
- • Mentor mid-level and junior developers through pair programming, code reviews, and career-development plans. You will identify skill gaps, recommend courses, and celebrate wins loudly so the team grows stronger every sprint.
- • Contribute design input when wireframes are still fluid. Your deep knowledge of CSS Grid, Flexbox, and the GOV.UK Design System will help UX iterate faster and avoid late re-work.
- • Surface risks early and communicate them in plain English to non-technical stakeholders. Whether it’s a third-party dependency with a shaky roadmap or a performance cliff at scale, you will quantify impact and propose mitigation options.
- • Keep documentation light but useful: README files that actually help new starters, ADRs that explain the “why,” and runbooks that save 3 am pages. You will treat docs as living artefacts, updating them as soon as reality changes.
- • Drive continuous improvement retrospectives. You will measure cycle time, defect escape rate, and team happiness, then run experiments to shave minutes off build times or reduce context switching.
- • Represent the front-end discipline in governance forums, demonstrating how security, privacy, and service standards are met without sacrificing delivery speed.
🎯 Requirements
- • Active UK Security Check (SC) clearance or the ability to obtain it within four weeks of offer—this is non-negotiable for accessing sensitive public-sector data.
- • Expert-level proficiency in React 18, TypeScript 5, and Next.js 14, including App Router, Server Components, and streaming SSR patterns.
- • Demonstrated experience delivering WCAG 2.2 AA compliant interfaces, evidenced by audits, VPATs, or live services with published accessibility statements.
- • Proven track record of designing and owning front-end testing strategies across unit, integration, and end-to-end layers in a continuous-deployment environment.
- • Strong communication skills with the ability to explain technical trade-offs to product managers, designers, and stakeholders with varying technical depth.
🏖️ Benefits
- • Fully remote working across the UK with quarterly in-person socials in London or Manchester—no mandated office days.
- • £1,500 annual personal learning budget plus 10% on-the-clock time for exploration, conferences, or certifications of your choice.
- • 30 days holiday plus bank holidays, and the option to buy or sell up to five additional days each year.
- • Employer-matched pension up to 8% and access to a discounted private medical scheme through Bupa.
