- • As a Senior/Lead Software Data Engineer on the Roads Team at Mapbox, you will play a pivotal role in building and scaling the data infrastructure that powers global road networks used in navigation, mapping, and location-based services—directly impacting how millions of users and enterprises experience location intelligence every day.
- • Your work will ensure the reliability, performance, and scalability of data pipelines that ingest, process, and enrich geospatial data at scale, enabling Mapbox to deliver high-definition maps and real-time routing with precision and speed.
- • You will take ownership of existing data processing pipelines, improving their efficiency, robustness, and observability while driving innovation through the design and implementation of new pipelines that support evolving product needs in road feature extraction, map updates, and HD map generation.
- • Day to day, you will design, develop, test, and deploy scalable data workflows using cloud-native technologies, with a focus on batch and stream processing systems that handle terabytes of geospatial data from diverse sources including satellite imagery, probe data, and OpenStreetMap.
- • You will collect, analyze, and monitor key performance metrics—such as latency, throughput, data quality, and pipeline success rates—to identify bottlenecks and optimize system behavior, ensuring SLAs are met for downstream mapping and navigation products.
- • You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams including product, data science, and software engineering to translate road network requirements into technical specifications, advocating for security best practices, data governance, and reproducible workflows in all stages of development.
- • You will mentor junior engineers, contribute to technical documentation, and participate in code and design reviews to uphold engineering excellence and foster a culture of continuous learning and knowledge sharing within the team.

- • In this role, you will deepen your expertise in distributed systems, cloud data engineering, and geospatial data processing while gaining exposure to cutting-edge technologies in HD mapping, real-time navigation, and AI-enhanced map generation—positioning you as a leader in the evolving field of location intelligence technology.
🎯 Requirements
- • Strong proficiency in at least one of the following programming languages: C++, Python, Scala, or Java, with proven ability to write clean, maintainable, and production-grade code.
- • Hands-on experience designing and operating data processing pipelines on AWS (S3, EC2, IAM, EMR, Glue, Athena, Kinesis) or equivalent cloud platforms, including infrastructure-as-code and pipeline orchestration.
- • Solid understanding of SQL and relational database principles, including query optimization, schema design, and experience with analytical engines such as Athena, Presto, or Spark SQL.
- • Demonstrated experience with distributed computing frameworks such as Apache Spark, Flink, or Hadoop, including job tuning, partitioning strategies, and fault tolerance mechanisms.
- • Proven track record using workflow orchestration tools like Apache Airflow, Oozie, or Luigi to manage complex, dependency-driven data pipelines in production environments.
- • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to evaluate trade-offs, justify technical decisions with data, and communicate complex ideas clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
