- • As a Senior/Lead Software Data Engineer on the Roads Team at Mapbox, you will play a pivotal role in building and scaling the foundational data infrastructure that powers global road networks used for navigation, mapping, and location-based services by millions of developers and enterprises worldwide.
- • Your work will directly impact the accuracy, performance, and reliability of Mapbox’s high-definition maps and real-time navigation systems, enabling safer, more efficient movement of people, goods, and vehicles across the globe.
- • Day to day, you will take ownership of existing data processing pipelines, improving their scalability, reliability, and efficiency through refactoring, optimization, and automation while ensuring data integrity and system observability.
- • You will design and implement new data processing pipelines from ingestion to transformation and storage, leveraging cloud-native technologies to handle petabyte-scale geospatial data with low latency and high throughput.
- • You will collect, monitor, and analyze key performance metrics (throughput, latency, error rates, cost) using observability tools to proactively identify bottlenecks and drive continuous improvement in pipeline health and data quality.
- • You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to define and implement security best practices, including data encryption, access controls (IAM), audit logging, and compliance with privacy standards such as GDPR and CCPA.
- • You will participate in technical design reviews, mentor junior engineers, and contribute to architectural decisions that shape the long-term evolution of Mapbox’s data platform.

- • In this role, you will deepen your expertise in distributed systems, cloud data engineering, and geospatial data processing while gaining exposure to cutting-edge technologies in real-time streaming, schema evolution, and data governance.

🎯 Requirements
- • Strong proficiency in at least one programming language: C++, Python, Scala, or Java, with proven ability to write clean, maintainable, and production-grade code.
- • Hands-on experience with AWS core services including S3, EC2, IAM, EMR, Glue, Athena, and Kinesis, or equivalent experience on other major cloud platforms (GCP, Azure).
- • Solid understanding of SQL and relational database principles, including query optimization, indexing, and schema design for analytical workloads.
- • Demonstrated experience with distributed computing concepts such as partitioning, shuffling, fault tolerance, and exactly-once semantics.
- • Proven experience using workflow orchestration tools like Apache Airflow, Oozie, or Luigi to schedule, monitor, and manage complex data pipelines.
- • Excellent analytical thinking and communication skills, with the ability to clearly articulate technical trade-offs, justify design decisions, and collaborate effectively in English.
