  • • Lead the development and execution of CALSTART’s comprehensive communications strategy to advance mission-driven messaging around transportation decarbonization and clean air equity.
  • • Serve as the primary spokesperson and brand steward for CALSTART, ensuring consistent, accurate, and compelling communication across all platforms including website, social media, press releases, and public events.
  • • Craft and distribute high-impact press materials, media advisories, and thought leadership content to secure coverage in national and regional clean transportation, environmental, and policy outlets.
  • • Build and maintain strategic relationships with journalists, influencers, industry associations, and government stakeholders to amplify CALSTART’s visibility and policy influence.
  • • Manage internal communications to align staff, board members, and partners on key initiatives, organizational updates, and campaign milestones.
  • • Oversee the creation of annual reports, fact sheets, case studies, and digital content that translate complex technical and policy work into accessible narratives for diverse audiences.
  • • Coordinate crisis communications protocols and respond swiftly to emerging issues that may impact CALSTART’s reputation or mission.
  • • Collaborate with program teams to integrate communications into project planning, ensuring alignment between technical work and public messaging.
  • • Monitor media trends, public sentiment, and competitor communications to adapt strategy and maximize impact in the clean transportation sector.
  • • Supervise and mentor communications staff and contractors, providing guidance on content development, brand voice, and editorial standards.
  • • Manage the communications budget, vendor relationships, and third-party agencies to ensure cost-effective and high-quality output.
  • • Represent CALSTART at industry conferences, policy forums, and public events, delivering presentations and engaging with key stakeholders.
  • • Ensure all communications adhere to CALSTART’s core values of equity, inclusion, and scientific integrity.
  • • Track and report on communications metrics including media impressions, website traffic, social engagement, and audience growth to demonstrate ROI and inform future strategy.
  • • Partner with the development team to support fundraising efforts through compelling donor communications, grant narratives, and impact storytelling.
  • • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of federal, state, and local transportation policies and regulations to accurately position CALSTART’s work in public discourse.

🎯 Requirements

  • • Proven experience leading communications for a mission-driven organization in the environmental, transportation, or clean energy sector
  • • Demonstrated success in media relations, public relations, and strategic messaging for policy or technical audiences
  • • Strong writing, editing, and storytelling skills with ability to translate complex technical information into clear, compelling narratives
  • • Experience managing a communications team and/or external agencies
  • • Deep understanding of digital communications platforms, social media strategy, and content management systems
  • • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, remote environment
