- • Own and scale critical backend systems including data sync pipelines, search APIs, email/SMS delivery, and workflow automation with a focus on reliability and operational excellence.
- • Drive platform-level projects that enable new product capabilities such as activity feeds, custom objects, rate limiting, tenant isolation, and data enrichment integrations.
- • Collaborate closely with product engineers to identify and eliminate platform bottlenecks, improving the velocity and reliability of feature development across the engineering team.
- • Participate in the shared platform on-call rotation and lead post-incident reviews to enhance system observability, resilience, and incident response processes.
- • Help shape the backend foundation for Rally’s agentic platform, ensuring core systems can support AI agents running research workflows at scale.
- • Influence architectural decisions and establish engineering standards across the backend stack, including technology selection and deployment patterns.
- • Mentor engineers through code reviews, technical design discussions, and day-to-day pairing as the team grows and scales.
- • Build and maintain systems that handle hundreds of millions of participant records and billions of events, supporting Rally’s User Research CRM platform.
- • Work within a fully TypeScript codebase using Node.js to develop and operate high-throughput, low-latency backend services.
- • Leverage AWS managed services including ECS/Fargate, RDS/Aurora, and MSK to deploy and manage cloud-native infrastructure.
- • Design and implement event-driven systems using Kafka or equivalent streaming infrastructure to process real-time user and system events.
- • Ensure strong observability through metrics, logs, and traces, and use these to proactively detect and resolve system issues.
- • Partner with product, design, and go-to-market teams to align platform capabilities with customer needs and product roadmap priorities.
- • Contribute to a remote-first, async-first culture with core collaboration hours overlapping across US time zones and optional in-person team onsites.
- • Use Rally’s own platform to conduct user research, feed insights into product decisions, and operate as a customer-obsessed engineering team.
- • Experiment with AI tools internally and contribute to building an AI-native product that automates the full research recruiting lifecycle end to end.
- • Maintain high ownership of technical areas from design through implementation, rollout, and ongoing operation with minimal supervision.
- • Support the growth of a small, high-ownership platform engineering team by establishing norms, documentation, and standards from early-stage infrastructure.
🎯 Requirements
- • 6+ years of experience building and operating complex backend systems in production, ideally at a startup or high-ownership environment.
- • Strong TypeScript/Node.js fundamentals with hands-on experience in a fully TypeScript codebase.
- • Deep experience with AWS managed services (ECS/Fargate, RDS/Aurora, MSK) and modern cloud-native architecture patterns.
- • Experience with event-driven systems and streaming infrastructure (Kafka or equivalent).
- • Proven track record of owning significant technical areas end-to-end — from design through implementation, rollout, and ongoing operation.
- • Strong understanding of observability (metrics, logs, traces) and comfort with on-call responsibilities and production incident response.
