Full Job Description

đź“‹ Description

  • • Design and own backend systems for workforce management, including complex scheduling rules, labour forecasting, and payroll integrations that directly impact restaurant operational efficiency and compliance.
  • • Build and maintain APIs that power scheduling, payroll processing, and employee management workflows, ensuring data integrity, security, and graceful failure handling for sensitive personnel data.
  • • Evolve data models to support multi-jurisdiction labour compliance requirements, including US labour laws such as FLSA, as Nory expands into the New York market.
  • • Collaborate with the Data team to integrate AI and ML models into scheduling systems that optimise staffing based on demand forecasts, employee preferences, and legal constraints.
  • • Ship end-to-end product features across the stack — from backend services to frontend interactions — without waiting for dedicated frontend support, demonstrating ownership of full-feature delivery.
  • • Engage directly with restaurant operators and customer success teams to gather feedback, validate assumptions, and iterate on product decisions based on real-world usage patterns.
  • • Define and ship MVPs under ambiguity, making trade-off decisions without perfect information to accelerate learning and validate product hypotheses with real customers.
  • • Own problems end-to-end: from discovery and design through deployment and iteration, taking accountability for outcomes, not just task completion.
  • • Build greenfield systems in a high-growth environment, focusing on new functionality rather than maintaining legacy code, with a strong emphasis on correctness and compliance.
  • • Work closely with Product and Sales teams to prioritise and ship capabilities aligned with US market needs, ensuring rapid iteration based on customer feedback and regulatory requirements.
  • • Design systems that handle regulatory constraints where data accuracy and auditability are non-negotiable, ensuring compliance across Ireland, UK, Spain, and the US.
  • • Contribute to technical decision-making by proposing alternative approaches when requirements are misaligned with operational realities, and clearly articulating the rationale behind architectural trade-offs.
  • • Maintain a pragmatic approach to engineering: knowing when to build the right solution versus the fastest solution that proves a concept, and communicating that distinction to stakeholders.
  • • Participate in cross-functional squads alongside product, design, data, and customer success to ensure alignment and rapid feedback loops with real users.
  • • Support Nory’s expansion into the US by adapting systems to meet regional labour laws, payroll standards, and operational expectations while maintaining platform consistency.

🎯 Requirements

  • • Proven experience building and owning production backend systems — APIs, data models, distributed services — that real customers depend on, with ability to articulate specific data modelling decisions and trade-offs.
  • • Demonstrated ability to work across the full stack and ship end-to-end features independently, even if frontend is not a primary strength.
  • • Experience owning problems, not just tickets — shaping product direction, pushing back on requirements, and taking accountability for outcomes with phrases like "I decided" rather than "we decided."
  • • Experience building in constrained, ambiguous environments — startups, greenfield initiatives, or high-stakes projects — where you shipped real solutions without perfect information.
  • • Direct engagement with customers to inform product decisions, with a specific example of how feedback changed what you built.
  • • Pragmatic engineering mindset: ability to ship imperfect solutions for fast feedback and distinguish between "right" and "fast" solutions based on context.

🏖️ Benefits

  • • Competitive salary depending on experience
  • • Meaningful equity — everyone at Nory is an owner
  • • 35 days of paid leave per year (including bank holidays)
  • • Comprehensive private health insurance via Irish Life (Ireland) and Axa (UK)
  • • Enhanced parental leave and baby loss support
  • • €1000 annual learning & development budget + quarterly book budget
  • • €250 home office workspace budget
  • • Remote-first working environment with ability to work from anywhere for up to 3 months per year
  • • Offices available in London (GB), Dublin (IE), or Spain (ES)
  • • Regular team offsites and socials
