📋 Description

• As a Senior Software Development Engineer on the Routing Tiling team at Mapbox, you will play a critical role in powering global navigation experiences by transforming raw geospatial data into optimized routing tiles used by millions of users and major automotive partners like BMW. Your work directly impacts the accuracy, freshness, and reliability of navigation data at planetary scale.
• You will design, build, and operate high-performance data pipelines that process OpenStreetMap and commercial geospatial data, integrate real-time traffic signals, and ensure low-latency delivery of routing data to support mission-critical navigation applications.
• The Routing Tiling team operates at the forefront of large-scale geospatial data processing, combining distributed systems expertise with deep knowledge of routing algorithms and data quality assurance to enable seamless, real-time navigation experiences worldwide.
• You will collaborate with a globally distributed team of engineers focused on automation, system reliability, and continuous improvement, where innovation in data freshness and pipeline efficiency is actively encouraged and measured.
• In this role, you will deepen your expertise in performance-critical systems, distributed data processing, and geospatial intelligence while contributing to open-source-adjacent technologies that power location-based services across industries.
• You will gain hands-on experience optimizing end-to-end pipelines for scalability and resilience, reducing processing latency from days to hours, and ensuring data integrity through automated validation and quality gates.
• You will have the opportunity to influence architectural decisions, mentor peers through knowledge sharing, and grow into a technical leader within Mapbox’s engineering organization by solving complex problems at the intersection of systems, data, and real-world navigation.

🎯 Requirements

• Experience engineering modern C++ and Linux server applications in a commercial or open-source development environment, or equivalent performance-critical systems experience with Rust.
• Strong knowledge of operating systems and distributed systems concepts, including fault tolerance, consistency models, service discovery, and scalable architecture.
• Proven ability to apply a rigorous, data-driven approach to problem solving, using experimentation and analysis to improve system quality, reliability, and performance.
• Demonstrated willingness to learn and expand skills across the full technology stack, embracing challenges outside your comfort zone to grow as an engineer.
• Experience building or working on navigation guidance solutions, including familiarity with quality testing methodologies for routing accuracy and guidance quality.
