• • Join Boku, the leading global provider of mobile-first payment solutions, as a Senior Backend Software Engineer on a 3-year fixed-term contract. You will be instrumental in building a brand-new suite of products from the ground up within Boku’s Innovation department. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to greenfield development, focusing on designing and constructing new software rather than maintaining existing systems. You will operate within a small, highly autonomous team with a clear mission and a defined delivery timeline, reporting directly to the Head of Product and Engineering. Your work will directly impact a global payment network used by major brands like Amazon, Google, Meta, and Netflix, processing over $10 billion annually across more than 300 local payment methods in over 70 countries.
• • As a Backend Engineer, your primary responsibility will be to design and build production-grade services using Java and the Spring Boot ecosystem. These services must achieve high throughput, low latency, and exceptional availability (99.99%+). You will implement and evolve various API types, including RESTful, gRPC, and event-driven architectures, to support critical payment functions such as initiation, callback handling, reconciliation, and settlement flows. A key focus will be on building for fault tolerance and resilience, incorporating mechanisms like circuit breakers, retry logic, and idempotency, alongside graceful degradation under load. Maximum observability and telemetry will be at the core of your build process, ensuring that services are easily supportable and maintainable. You will also be responsible for optimizing service performance through rigorous profiling, load testing, and meticulous data access layer design, working with both SQL and NoSQL databases. Collaboration is key; you will work closely with colleagues and offshore development teams, providing essential code reviews and guidance to ensure a high standard of development across the board.
• • You will be building the core components of new payment systems, including Payout, Card Processing, and FX systems, from scratch. This involves developing a payout processing engine, an AI agent treasury orchestration layer, and a cash forecasting service. This is entirely new development, offering a clean slate for innovation. A critical aspect of this role involves contributing to PCI DSS compliant system design and implementation. This includes ensuring the secure handling of sensitive data, robust audit logging, and strict access control measures, adhering to the highest industry standards for financial security.
• • While primarily a backend role, you will also contribute to frontend development using React for internal tooling, operational dashboards, and merchant-facing interfaces as needed. You will collaborate closely with Product and Design teams to deliver functional, well-tested UI features that meet Boku's stringent quality standards. Furthermore, you will support integration with FX data sources, such as Bloomberg feeds, for real-time rate pricing, settlement FX, and treasury risk tooling. This includes contributing to cash position and FX exposure monitoring services in conjunction with Finance and Treasury stakeholders.
• • Reliability and operations are paramount. You will instrument all projects with comprehensive observability from day one, integrating structured logging, distributed tracing, metrics, and alerting as fundamental parts of the product, not as afterthoughts. You will also set up CI/CD pipelines, configure container builds (Docker/EKS), and implement code quality gating (SonarCloud, SAST) as part of the new infrastructure, ensuring it adheres to Boku’s engineering standards and is handed over as a complete, operational product. This role is focused on new development, and on-call duties for existing production services are outside the scope of this contract.
