đź“‹ Description
- • As a Senior Software Engineer on the Asgard - Better Route team at Bettermile GmbH, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the technical backbone of a cutting-edge, AI-powered last-mile logistics platform that is transforming delivery efficiency and user experience across Europe. Your work will directly impact the scalability, reliability, and innovation of stateful backend systems that power real-time routing, driver task management, notifications, and time-sensitive logistics operations for diverse customer integrations.
- • You will own the end-to-end backend development lifecycle for new and existing features, from initial design and architecture through implementation, testing, deployment, and ongoing maintenance. This includes designing and developing highly available, fault-tolerant microservices in Kotlin and Spring Boot capable of handling high-throughput, real-time data ingestion under variable loads, ensuring seamless interoperability with internal data platforms (Snowflake, Athena, Airflow) and external services via AWS ecosystems (ECS, EC2, DynamoDB, SQS, EventBridge, ElastiCache). You will drive the integration of GenAI and ML-driven features — such as intelligent route optimization, predictive ETA modeling, and automated anomaly detection — keeping the team at the forefront of technological innovation in logistics tech.
- • You will serve as the expert engineering voice within the Asgard team, aligning technical strategy with product vision by translating complex business requirements into robust, maintainable architectures. This involves leading technical discussions, mentoring junior engineers, conducting code reviews, and advocating for best practices in observability, resilience, and performance tuning using tools like New Relic, Pulumi (IaC), and AWS monitoring suites. Close collaboration with Product, Data, and other Engineering teams will be essential to ensure cohesive feature delivery and data consistency across the platform.
- • You will work in a hybrid environment at Bettermile’s modern, inclusive Better Space in Berlin-Kreuzberg — a kid- and pet-friendly office that fosters connection through weekly team days — while enjoying the flexibility of up to 12 weeks of remote work per year from anywhere. The company’s flat hierarchy, high autonomy, and strong emphasis on psychological safety create an environment where your ideas are valued, experimentation is encouraged, and professional growth is actively supported through mentorship, learning budgets, and exposure to cutting-edge technologies.
- • In this role, you will deepen your expertise in Kotlin-based backend engineering at scale, gain hands-on experience with modern AI/ML integration in production systems, and become a key contributor to a mission-driven product that reduces urban congestion, lowers emissions, and improves livelihoods for delivery workers and end-users alike. You’ll have the opportunity to influence architectural decisions, lead cross-functional initiatives, and grow into a technical leader within a fast-scaling, purpose-driven tech company that celebrates diversity (130+ employees, 36 languages, 35% female representation) and values both technical excellence and human connection.
🎯 Requirements
- • 5+ years of proven experience in backend software engineering, with a strong focus on building and maintaining highly available, scalable microservices in production environments.
- • Minimum 1+ years of hands-on, in-production experience with Kotlin and Spring Boot, demonstrating proficiency in JVM-based backend development, asynchronous programming, and REST/gRPC API design.
- • Demonstrated experience designing and operating distributed systems on AWS (including ECS, EC2, DynamoDB, SQS, EventBridge, or ElastiCache), with familiarity in Infrastructure as Code (preferably Pulumi or Terraform) and observability tools like New Relic, Prometheus, or Datadog.
- • Strong curiosity and practical interest in applying AI/ML and GenAI techniques to real-world engineering problems — ideally with exposure to ML pipelines, model serving, or AI-enhanced feature development in web applications.
- • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, and a proven track record of thriving in cross-functional, collaborative environments.
- • Authorization to work in Germany or possession of a valid Job Seeker Visa, as Bettermile currently only considers candidates eligible to work within Germany.
🏖️ Benefits
- • 30 vacation days per year under a 5-day/week model, plus additional time off for personal well-being and company-wide breaks.
- • Hybrid work model with up to 12 weeks of remote work annually from any location, supported by weekly in-person team days at the Berlin-Kreuzberg office to strengthen collaboration and team cohesion.
- • Comprehensive wellness and lifestyle perks: kindergarten grant, company pension scheme, regular team breakfasts, fruits/snacks/coffee (including plant-based milks), fitness & wellness classes, company runs, and social events fostering a supportive, inclusive culture.
- • Access to cutting-edge tools and technologies: GitHub Copilot, Cloud Code, AWS, Pulumi, New Relic, Snowflake, and AI/ML platforms — encouraging experimentation and continuous skill growth.
- • A diverse, international team of 130+ people speaking 36 languages, with 35% female representation (above tech industry average), flat hierarchy, high autonomy, and a culture that values psychological safety, creativity, and Schlager enthusiasts alike.
- • Professional growth opportunities through mentorship, learning budgets, exposure to GenAI/ML integration, and the chance to take ownership of impactful features from day one in a fast-growing, mission-driven company transforming last-mile logistics.
