📋 Description

• • Own the architecture and delivery of large-scale, high-impact features across dbt Cloud and dbt Core that are used by 50,000+ data teams weekly. You will translate complex product requirements into elegant technical designs, lead cross-functional engineering pods, and ensure every line of code raises the bar for reliability, security, and performance.
• • Serve as a technical anchor for one or more product domains—such as orchestration, governance, or developer experience—by writing production-grade Python, TypeScript, and SQL while coaching teammates through rigorous code reviews, pair programming, and architecture discussions. Your day-to-day contributions will directly influence how analysts, engineers, and business stakeholders around the world build and trust their data pipelines.
• • Drive the evolution of our distributed, event-driven platform that processes billions of model runs per month. You will optimize job scheduling, scale metadata services, and harden multi-tenant isolation so that customers from seed-stage start-ups to Fortune 50 giants can run dbt in mission-critical environments without fear of failure or data loss.
• • Champion a culture of observability and operational excellence by instrumenting services with OpenTelemetry, defining SLIs/SLOs, and leading blameless post-mortems. When incidents occur, you will be the calm, data-driven voice that coordinates response, surfaces learnings, and turns chaos into durable improvements that prevent recurrence.
• • Collaborate deeply with Product, UX, and Data Science to prototype new capabilities—think column-level lineage, real-time CI feedback, or AI-assisted refactoring—and then shepherd those prototypes through beta, GA, and long-term maintenance. Your ability to balance visionary thinking with pragmatic delivery will determine how quickly the analytics community can adopt the next generation of data tooling.
• • Mentor senior and staff engineers, helping them grow from strong individual contributors into technical leaders who can independently own large initiatives. You will craft growth plans, delegate effectively, and model inclusive leadership that amplifies diverse voices across a globally distributed, fully remote team.
• • Influence the open-source dbt Core roadmap by engaging with maintainers and the broader community on GitHub, Slack, and Discourse. Whether you are reviewing RFCs, triaging performance regressions, or shipping new adapter interfaces, your work will set the standard for how analytics engineering is practiced worldwide.
• • Continuously improve engineering velocity by refining our monorepo tooling, automated testing matrix (15+ data warehouses, 3 clouds, 5 Python versions), and GitHub Actions–based CI/CD that deploys to production dozens of times per day. You will identify bottlenecks, experiment boldly, and share wins company-wide so every team ships faster and safer.
• • Contribute to dbt Labs’ security and compliance posture by designing systems that meet SOC 2 Type II, HIPAA, and ISO 27001 controls. You will partner with Security Engineering to conduct threat modeling, automate vulnerability scanning, and embed privacy-by-design principles into new features from day one.
• • Represent dbt Labs at conferences, meetups, and customer advisory boards, sharing technical deep dives and real-world case studies that inspire practitioners and attract top talent. Your thought leadership will reinforce our position as the definitive platform for analytics engineering and help shape the future of the modern data stack.
