Full Job Description
đź“‹ Description
- • Architect the backbone of the energy transition. As a Senior Staff Back-end Engineer at Arbor, you will design and scale the distributed systems that turn chaotic utility data into real-time savings for tens of thousands of homes and businesses. Every line of code you ship directly lowers electricity bills and accelerates the shift to renewable power.
- • Own the full lifecycle of our marketplace infrastructure—from whiteboard sketches to production traffic measured in billions of API calls per month. You’ll start with a blank cursor and end with a fault-tolerant platform that ingests live pricing feeds from 150+ utilities, runs AI-driven matching algorithms, and settles multi-million-dollar supplier contracts every hour.
- • Build the data pipelines that make energy prices transparent. You’ll create streaming ETL jobs that parse cryptic PDF tariffs, scrape SCADA feeds, and normalize rate structures across deregulated markets in Texas, Ohio, New England, and beyond. The result: a single source of truth that powers our mobile app, web dashboard, and partner APIs with sub-second latency.
- • Design cloud-native services that scale 10× without 10× cost. Using GCP Cloud Run, Pub/Sub, and BigQuery, you’ll craft event-driven architectures that auto-scale from zero to peak demand when a heatwave hits Texas or a nor’easter blankets Boston. Terraform will be your paintbrush; cost efficiency and carbon footprint will be your north stars.
- • Integrate with legacy utility systems that still run on FTP and COBOL. You’ll write adapters that translate archaic EDI 810 invoices into modern JSON, build OAuth gateways for smart-meter APIs, and negotiate rate-limiting strategies with suppliers who think 10 requests per minute is generous. Diplomacy and code quality go hand in hand.
- • Ship AI-augmented features that feel like magic. You’ll pair with our data science team to productionize models that predict bill spikes, recommend optimal switch dates, and auto-correct meter-reading anomalies. Expect to leverage GPT-based code generation, automated test synthesis, and LLM-driven documentation so you can focus on the 10% of work that truly requires human ingenuity.
- • Champion observability and reliability across the stack. You’ll define SLIs/SLOs for every critical path, instrument services with OpenTelemetry, and build chaos-engineering drills that simulate utility outages before they happen. When a supplier API goes dark at 2 a.m., your runbooks and alerting will wake the right person—not everyone.
- • Mentor engineers and uplevel our AI-augmented culture. You’ll lead architecture reviews, pair program with juniors, and run lunch-and-learns on “Prompt-Driven Development.” Your pull-request comments will be legendary—equal parts code critique and teaching moment.
- • Collaborate cross-functionally with product, operations, and legal. You’ll translate regulatory filings into technical specs, negotiate data-sharing agreements with utilities, and occasionally hop on a Zoom with a supplier’s CTO to debug a rate-calculation discrepancy. Communication clarity is as important as code clarity.
- • Enjoy extreme ownership in a team that deploys to prod multiple times a day. There is no “platform team” handing off tickets—you build it, you run it, you scale it. If you’ve ever dreamed of seeing your backend changes save a customer $200 before lunch, this is the place.
