- • Design, build, and maintain scalable backend systems that power VRChat’s global social VR platform, supporting over 250,000 user-created worlds and millions of concurrent users.
- • Architect and optimize distributed services that enable real-time multiplayer interactions, avatar synchronization, and world loading across diverse devices and network conditions.
- • Collaborate with frontend, gameplay, and community teams to implement new platform features that enhance user creativity and social interaction in VR.
- • Improve system reliability and performance by identifying bottlenecks, reducing latency, and implementing monitoring, alerting, and automated recovery systems.
- • Lead the migration and modernization of legacy infrastructure to cloud-native architectures using containerization, microservices, and infrastructure-as-code practices.
- • Review and mentor engineering team members on code quality, system design, and operational excellence, fostering a culture of technical ownership and innovation.
- • Work closely with data and analytics teams to ensure platform telemetry is accurately captured and used to inform product decisions and scalability planning.
- • Maintain and extend APIs that serve as the backbone for third-party tools, modding communities, and external integrations within the VRChat ecosystem.
- • Ensure platform security and compliance by implementing best practices for authentication, data privacy, and content moderation infrastructure.
- • Participate in on-call rotations to respond to production incidents, conduct post-mortems, and implement preventive measures to reduce recurrence.
- • Contribute to technical roadmaps by evaluating emerging technologies and proposing solutions that align with VRChat’s vision for an open, user-driven metaverse.
- • Advocate for developer experience improvements by enhancing tooling, documentation, and deployment pipelines to accelerate feature delivery across teams.
- • Support cross-functional initiatives to expand platform accessibility, including optimizations for low-end hardware and global network resilience.
- • Engage with the VRChat community to understand creator needs and translate feedback into technical requirements for platform enhancements.
- • Balance rapid iteration with long-term system stability, ensuring that new features do not compromise performance or user trust.
🎯 Requirements
- • 7+ years of experience building and scaling distributed systems in high-traffic environments
- • Proven expertise in backend development using languages such as C#, Go, or Python
- • Deep understanding of cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure) and container orchestration (Kubernetes)
- • Experience with real-time multiplayer systems, networking protocols, and low-latency architecture
- • Strong track record of leading technical initiatives and mentoring senior engineers
- • Experience with infrastructure-as-code tools (Terraform, Ansible) and CI/CD pipelines
