Full Job Description

đź“‹ Description

  • • Own the architecture, design, and delivery of the backend systems that power Scout Motors’ next-generation digital products, including mobile apps, web portals, and in-vehicle experiences that connect owners to their vehicles 24/7.
  • • Lead a distributed team of 6–10 backend engineers across multiple time zones, providing technical mentorship, code-review excellence, and hands-on pairing to raise the bar for Go, Kotlin, and Rust services running on Kubernetes and AWS.
  • • Translate product vision into scalable technical roadmaps; partner with Product, Design, Hardware, and Vehicle Software teams to define APIs, data contracts, and event schemas that let a 1960s icon behave like a 2030s software platform.
  • • Architect highly available, low-latency microservices (sub-100 ms P99) that ingest millions of telematics events per day from global vehicle fleets, process them in real time with Kafka and Flink, and surface actionable insights to drivers and service teams.
  • • Champion security-first development: design zero-trust service meshes, enforce mTLS, rotate secrets automatically with Vault, and shepherd every pull request through rigorous static analysis, SAST/DAST, and threat-model reviews.
  • • Build and evolve a unified identity & access layer that supports single sign-on across mobile, web, and third-party integrations (Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Alexa), while meeting SOC 2, ISO 27001, and emerging UNECE WP.29 regulations.
  • • Establish SLAs, SLOs, and error budgets; instrument services with OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, and Grafana dashboards that give on-call engineers the context they need to resolve incidents in minutes, not hours.
  • • Drive cost optimization: right-size EC2/EKS clusters, adopt Graviton and Spot where it makes sense, and build FinOps guardrails so every feature launch includes a forecast and a run-rate review.
  • • Spearhead the migration from a monolithic Java stack to an event-driven, domain-oriented architecture; create repeatable patterns for strangler-fig refactors that minimize risk and downtime.
  • • Mentor senior and staff-level engineers on distributed-systems design, domain-driven design, and test-driven development; conduct architecture guild sessions and brown-bag talks to level up the entire engineering org.
  • • Collaborate with Data Science to expose feature-rich, GDPR-compliant data pipelines that enable predictive maintenance, usage-based insurance, and personalized in-vehicle experiences.
  • • Influence the technical hiring strategy: refine backend interview loops, create take-home challenges that reflect real-world problems, and serve as a bar-raiser on every candidate packet.
  • • Contribute to open-source projects that Scout depends on (Envoy, Kafka, Kubernetes operators) and represent Scout at conferences, meetups, and on our engineering blog.
  • • Foster an inclusive, feedback-rich culture where psychological safety enables bold innovation; celebrate wins, run blameless post-mortems, and ensure every voice is heard.

🎯 Requirements

  • • 10+ years of backend engineering experience with at least 3 years in a staff-level or principal role designing and operating cloud-native, event-driven systems at scale.
  • • Expert-level proficiency in one or more of Go, Kotlin, Java, or Rust, plus deep knowledge of distributed systems concepts (CAP, consensus, idempotency, backpressure).
  • • Demonstrated success leading technical migrations (monolith → microservices, REST → gRPC, on-prem → cloud) with measurable improvements in reliability, velocity, or cost.
  • • Hands-on experience with AWS (EKS, RDS, DynamoDB, MSK, IAM, KMS), Infrastructure-as-Code (Terraform or CDK), and CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions, Argo CD).
  • • Track record of mentoring senior engineers and influencing cross-functional teams without direct authority; strong written and verbal communication skills.

🏖️ Benefits

  • • 100 % remote-first culture with quarterly in-person summits in iconic off-road destinations (Moab, Baja, Vermont) and a generous home-office stipend.
  • • Equity participation in a pre-IPO company backed by Volkswagen Group, plus a 401(k) with 6 % company match and immediate vesting.
  • • Flexible PTO policy (minimum 20 days encouraged) and annual “Recharge Week” where the entire company powers down to prevent burnout.
  • • Annual $3,500 professional-development budget for conferences, courses, or certifications, plus paid volunteer days to support causes you care about.
