Full Job Description
đź“‹ Description
- • Serve as the go-to fuel & excise tax authority for Fortune 500 manufacturers, distributors, and retailers across North America, translating dense Federal, State, and Provincial statutes into clear, actionable guidance that protects millions in product flows every day.
- • Own end-to-end compliance for U.S. and Canadian fuel and excise tax returns—gathering transactional data from ERP feeds, configuring Vertex or ONESOURCE calculations, validating volumetric conversions, and filing returns with 100 % accuracy ahead of statutory deadlines.
- • Lead overpayment recovery engagements: mine multi-year transaction histories, isolate double-paid excise liabilities, quantify refund opportunities, and shepherd claims through jurisdictional review, often returning six- and seven-figure savings to clients within 90 days.
- • Partner with Tax Managers and Directors to design audit defense strategies—compiling supporting schedules, drafting technical memos, and negotiating directly with Federal, State, and Provincial auditors to reduce or eliminate proposed assessments.
- • Conduct reverse audits on behalf of clients who suspect competitors or vendors have misapplied tax rates; present findings in concise executive briefings that drive policy changes and cost recoveries.
- • Research emerging legislation—such as carbon pricing, renewable fuel standards, and low-carbon fuel programs—then craft client alerts, webinars, and one-page cheat sheets that keep stakeholders ahead of regulatory shifts.
- • Travel 10-25 % to client refineries, terminals, and corporate offices to observe operations, validate product movement data, and build trust with CFOs, VPs of Tax, and Supply Chain leaders.
- • Build repeatable process documentation and Excel-based analytical templates that junior staff can leverage, raising overall team efficiency and reducing review cycles.
- • Track engagement budgets, enter job-cost hours daily, and provide weekly forecasting updates to Directors, ensuring projects remain profitable and transparent.
- • Identify cross-selling opportunities during client interactions—spotting sales & use tax, property tax, or unclaimed property issues—and seamlessly loop in DMA specialists to expand the firm’s footprint.
- • Mentor junior consultants by reviewing workpapers, sharing advanced Excel techniques, and modeling professional communication with taxing authorities.
- • Contribute to DMA’s thought-leadership library by drafting articles, presenting at industry conferences, and participating in internal knowledge-sharing sessions that reinforce our reputation as the premier fuel tax consultancy in North America.
