Full Job Description

đź“‹ Description

  • • As a Software Development Engineer II on Mapbox’s Navigation API team, you will play a critical role in advancing the company’s electric vehicle (EV) routing capabilities, directly contributing to sustainable transportation solutions used by industry leaders like BMW, Toyota, Rivian, Instacart, and Strava. Your work will help power real-time, energy-efficient navigation experiences that reduce range anxiety and optimize fleet operations at scale.
  • • You will design, implement, and maintain high-performance backend services for Mapbox’s EV routing engine, primarily written in Rust, while collaborating on supporting systems for data ingestion, storage, and API delivery. This includes evolving battery consumption models, integrating live traffic and energy data, and ensuring services are resilient, observable, and scalable across global deployments.
  • • Day-to-day responsibilities include designing and building scalable microservices for routing and API tiers, conducting performance experiments to validate reliability and capacity, participating in end-to-end feature development, conducting code and design reviews, and contributing to on-call rotations to ensure service health.
  • • You will work closely with product, sales engineering, and management teams to translate customer needs into technical roadmaps, influencing the future direction of Mapbox’s navigation products in automotive, logistics, and consumer mobility sectors.
  • • The Navigation team operates as a highly visible, cross-functional unit within Mapbox, giving you frequent opportunities to collaborate with experts in geospatial systems, distributed computing, traffic telemetry, and AI-enhanced engineering workflows.
  • • In this role, you will deepen your expertise in systems engineering, Rust-based backend development, and geospatial algorithms while gaining hands-on experience with AWS-based container orchestration (ECS, Fargate, Kubernetes), observability tooling, and data-driven performance optimization.
  • • You will strengthen your ability to balance technical excellence with product impact, learning how to make data-informed trade-offs between latency, accuracy, and scalability in real-world navigation systems used by millions.
  • • The role fosters continuous learning through knowledge sharing, blameless postmortems, and exposure to cutting-edge challenges in EV energy modeling and real-time routing — positioning you to grow into a technical leader within Mapbox’s engineering organization.

🎯 Requirements

  • • 3+ years of professional experience engineering web services, with strong proficiency in backend development; experience in Rust, C++, or Node.js is a significant advantage.
  • • Proven experience building and operating highly available API services in containerized environments (Docker, ECS, Fargate, Kubernetes) on AWS, including service monitoring, incident response, and continuous improvement practices.
  • • Solid understanding of operating systems and distributed systems principles, including fault tolerance, consistency models, service discovery, and performance profiling; familiarity with algorithms and data structures to optimize service behavior.

🏖️ Benefits

  • • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance plans, along with generous parental leave policies and flexible work arrangements to support work-life integration.
  • • Access to ongoing learning and development resources, including technical training, conference attendance, and internal knowledge-sharing initiatives to foster professional growth.
  • • A commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, with supportive benefits and workplace practices designed to empower employees of all backgrounds, genders, ethnicities, abilities, and orientations.
