đź“‹ Description
- • As a Software Development Engineer III on the Maps Rendering team at Mapbox, you will lead the development of Mapbox GL JS, the industry’s leading open-source map rendering engine that powers dynamic, interactive maps for millions of users worldwide. Your work will directly impact how developers and end-users experience location-based applications across web platforms, ensuring high performance, visual fidelity, and reliability at scale.
- • You will drive technical excellence by solving complex problems in graphics programming, real-time data visualization, and browser-based rendering systems, collaborating closely with product, design, and engineering teams to shape an ambitious roadmap that pushes the boundaries of what’s possible in interactive mapping.
- • Day to day, you will author and review TypeScript code, optimize rendering pipelines using WebGL and emerging WebGPU standards, profile and improve performance bottlenecks, and architect scalable solutions for handling large geospatial datasets in the browser.
- • You will mentor junior engineers, participate in design reviews, contribute to open-source development practices, and ensure code quality through rigorous testing, documentation, and adherence to engineering best practices.
- • Collaboration is central to this role: you will work cross-functionally with native mobile rendering teams to align features and behaviors across platforms, ensuring a consistent user experience whether users are on web, iOS, or Android.
- • You will engage in technical discussions with product managers and designers to translate user needs into feasible, innovative features, balancing technical constraints with product vision.
- • The Maps Rendering team operates at the forefront of browser technology, experimenting with Web Workers for off-main-thread computation, WebAssembly for performance-critical modules, and advanced shader techniques to deliver smooth, immersive map interactions.
- • You will contribute to Mapbox’s mission of democratizing location technology by making powerful mapping tools accessible, secure, and privacy-compliant for developers everywhere.
- • Mapbox fosters a culture of continuous learning and psychological safety, where engineers are encouraged to share knowledge, seek feedback, and grow both technically and personally through mentorship, internal tech talks, and access to cutting-edge resources.
- • The company values diversity, inclusion, and authenticity, supporting employees to bring their whole selves to work through flexible arrangements, comprehensive health benefits, and equitable opportunities for advancement.
- • By joining Mapbox, you will become part of a global team of over 4 million developers who rely on the platform to build innovative location-aware applications — from logistics and transportation to gaming and urban planning — giving your work broad societal and commercial impact.
🎯 Requirements
- • Deep expertise in TypeScript and modern JavaScript/ECMAScript standards, with proven experience building and maintaining large-scale web applications.
- • Strong background in graphics programming, including hands-on experience with WebGL, OpenGL, or similar real-time rendering APIs.
- • Demonstrated ability to solve complex performance and algorithmic challenges in systems involving large data sets, real-time rendering, or concurrent processing.
- • Excellent collaboration and communication skills, with experience working effectively in distributed, cross-functional teams using agile methodologies.
- • Familiarity with WebGPU, Web Workers, or WebAssembly is a strong plus, indicating readiness to adopt next-generation web technologies.
- • Experience with native development (C++, mobile SDKs) or contributions to open-source projects is appreciated but not required.
🏖️ Benefits
- • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance plans, including mental health support and wellness resources.
- • Generous parental leave policies and flexible working arrangements to support work-life balance and personal life events.
- • Annual learning and development stipend to pursue courses, conferences, certifications, or technical growth opportunities.
- • Equity compensation and participation in Mapbox’s long-term success through stock options.
- • Remote-first work culture with opportunities to connect with global teams through virtual and occasional in-person events.
- • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, including employee resource groups, inclusive hiring practices, and a workplace where everyone can thrive.
