đź“‹ Description
- • As a Software Engineer, Backend at WorkWhile Inc., you will play a critical role in building and scaling the technology that powers a mission-driven platform designed to transform the hourly labor market by providing workers with greater flexibility, same-day pay, telehealth access, and upskilling opportunities—directly addressing financial instability faced by over 80 million Americans in hourly roles.
- • You will collaborate closely with engineers, designers, founders, and cross-functional teammates to design, develop, and maintain robust backend systems that improve reliability, performance, and scalability, ensuring the platform can efficiently match workers with shifts while supporting business needs through AI-powered talent access.
- • Your day-to-day responsibilities will include writing clean, maintainable Python code to develop and enhance backend services, participating in code reviews, debugging production issues, optimizing database queries and API performance, and contributing to infrastructure improvements that support system resilience and observability.
- • You will actively engage in agile development practices, including sprint planning, stand-ups, and retrospectives, while taking ownership of features from conception to deployment, ensuring thoughtful design and continuous learning are embedded in your work.
- • You will help evolve the platform’s architecture to support growing user demand, implement monitoring and alerting systems, and contribute to technical documentation and knowledge sharing to strengthen team capabilities.
- • The engineering team at WorkWhile is small but highly experienced, comprising senior engineers from top-tier companies like Rippling, Stripe, DoorDash, and Faire, fostering a culture of technical excellence, user-centricity, and pragmatic innovation where speed and competence are balanced with collaboration and fun.
- • The company values independence and ownership, encouraging engineers to take initiative on projects while remaining aligned with team goals, and emphasizes outcomes over rigid project tracking to maintain agility and impact in a fast-moving startup environment.
- • In this role, you will deepen your expertise in backend systems, distributed architectures, and scalable Python applications while gaining exposure to AI-integrated platforms and modern DevOps practices, positioning you for growth as a full-stack or infrastructure-focused engineer.
- • You will have the opportunity to see the direct impact of your work on real-world workers and businesses, contributing to a product that reduces scheduling friction, increases earnings stability, and expands access to benefits—allowing you to grow not just technically, but as a purpose-driven engineer committed to social impact.
🎯 Requirements
- • Strong fundamentals in Python and backend development, including experience with RESTful APIs, databases (SQL or NoSQL), and server-side logic
- • Ability to take initiative and see projects through to completion with support from the team, demonstrating ownership and follow-through
- • Collaborative mindset and curiosity to understand user needs, with clear and thoughtful communication skills in both written and verbal forms
- • Interest in growing your skills and staying current with modern development practices, including testing, CI/CD, and observability tools
🏖️ Benefits
- • Remote-friendly work culture with office hubs in San Francisco, New York, Seattle, and Toronto, offering flexibility in how and where you work
- • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage to support your health and well-being
- • 401(k) plan with employer match to help you build long-term financial security
- • Flexible time off and a WFH stipend to support your home office setup and work-life balance
- • In-person company offsites that foster connection, collaboration, and team bonding across locations
