  • • Design, implement, and optimize compiler features for Swift on Windows and Android platforms, extending the Swift toolchain beyond macOS and iOS.
  • • Collaborate with Apple and the LLVM/Swift open-source communities to upstream changes to Swift, LLVM, and related projects, ensuring contributions benefit the broader developer ecosystem.
  • • Investigate and resolve performance bottlenecks in the Swift compiler, focusing on memory allocation, Profile-Guided Optimization (PGO), Link-Time Optimization (LTO), BOLT, and hot function identification.
  • • Maintain and expand cross-platform support for Swift across X86_64 and ARM64 architectures, including emerging architectures like RISC-V, ensuring consistent behavior and performance.
  • • Build and maintain custom toolchains for macOS and Windows, integrating with development environments such as Xcode and VSCode to improve developer productivity.
  • • Develop deployment solutions for alternative Swift toolchains to enable seamless cross-compilation workflows across target platforms.
  • • Enhance Swift interoperability with C/C++ and Java/Kotlin to enable robust multi-language application development on Windows and Android.
  • • Enable and improve CI testing, debugging tools, and profiling capabilities for Swift on Windows and Android to ensure toolchain reliability and performance.
  • • Participate in weekly engineering discussions on architecture, code review standards, code style, and infrastructure improvements including observability and performance regression monitoring.
  • • Contribute to the company’s browser product by improving the underlying Swift-based runtime and tooling that powers Arc and Dia across all platforms.
  • • Mentor and pair program with newer engineers to accelerate their onboarding and proficiency with the Swift compiler codebase and cross-platform tooling.
  • • Interview and evaluate candidates for engineering roles at The Browser Company after completing internal training.
  • • Work closely with the open-source community to identify pain points in Swift’s Windows and Android support and drive solutions that improve developer experience.
  • • Post regular product feedback on the company’s browser in the #dogfooding channel to inform development priorities and user experience improvements.
  • • Contribute to the company’s open-source repositories on GitHub and maintain visibility through the Speaking in Swift blog.
  • • Ensure all work aligns with the company’s principle of open source by default, with nearly all contributions landing upstream in LLVM or Swift.
  • • Support the company’s mission to build a browser that empowers users to grow, create, and stay curious by enabling a robust, performant, and safe Swift-based foundation.

🎯 Requirements

  • • 4+ years of experience working with language compilers and complex codebases, such as LLVM.
  • • Experience with Swift and/or C++ in production compiler or toolchain development.
  • • Strong understanding of build systems, tooling, and optimization techniques including PGO, LTO, and BOLT.
  • • Ability to work with at least one of the target operating systems: Windows, macOS, Android, or iOS.
  • • Minimum 4+ hours of overlap with Eastern Time Zone (ET) due to team collaboration requirements.
