📋 Description

• Own Render's core compute infrastructure across multiple cloud providers, regions, and data centers, shaping the evolution of the platform as it scales rapidly.
• Design and build capabilities that enhance user performance and flexibility in service deployment, availability, and resilience, even during underlying resource failures.
• Investigate complex cloud and compute issues across the entire stack—from kernel and data plane to Kubernetes clusters, control plane, and orchestration mechanisms.
• Improve infrastructure performance and reliability through systematic profiling, experimentation, and tuning of critical systems.
• Partner with engineers across the company to build a stable, predictable, and secure platform trusted by over 6 million developers.
• Participate in an on-call rotation to respond to incidents, continuously improving detection, response, and post-mortem learning processes.
• Scale and automate the creation, configuration, testing, and tuning of Render’s Kubernetes clusters across hyperscalers and on-premises hardware.
• Expand Render’s infrastructure to new geographic regions, deploy on bare metal, and orchestrate micro VMs outside of Kubernetes entirely.
• Develop custom infrastructure components, controllers, and scheduling logic using Go, Rust, or similar languages to implement business logic for resource management.
• Optimize node, pod, and container spin-up times to reduce latency and improve developer experience.
• Secure and isolate workloads in multi-tenant environments to ensure tenant safety and compliance with platform reliability standards.
• Extend and modify open-source and industry-standard technologies to meet Render’s unique demands for reliability, performance, and scalability.
• Contribute to architectural decisions that eliminate undifferentiated infrastructure work for developers, enabling them to focus on product development.
• Document and share learnings from system failures, performance bottlenecks, and optimizations to elevate team-wide technical knowledge.
• Collaborate with product and infrastructure teams to align platform capabilities with developer needs for AI-native and full-stack applications.

🎯 Requirements

• At least 7 years of experience building and operating large-scale platform or compute infrastructure.
• Deep expertise in operating, scaling, and enhancing Kubernetes clusters or similar resource/container orchestration systems.
• Experience developing in Go, Rust, or similar languages to build custom infrastructure components, controllers, and scheduling logic.
• Strong experience designing, debugging, and operating distributed systems.
• Comfort going broad and deep in complex systems, making tradeoffs to improve performance and efficiency without sacrificing reliability.
• Experience planning and executing rapid, high-risk upgrades or changes with minimal downtime to user services.
