Full Job Description

📋 Description • Join Penn Interactive as a Software Engineer, Data and become the architect of the data systems that power North America’s largest integrated entertainment, sports content, and casino gaming platform. You will design, build, and scale the pipelines that ingest billions of real-time events from our casinos, racetracks, online gaming, sports betting, and entertainment content channels, turning raw data into actionable insights that drive every strategic decision across the company. • Own the end-to-end lifecycle of data products—from ingestion to visualization—ensuring that stakeholders in marketing, product, compliance, and executive leadership receive timely, accurate, and secure datasets. You will write production-grade Python, Scala, or Java code that runs on cloud-native infrastructure (AWS, GCP, or Azure), orchestrate workflows with Airflow or Prefect, and optimize distributed processing engines such as Spark and Flink to handle terabyte-scale workloads with sub-second latency. • Build and maintain dimensional data models in Snowflake, BigQuery, or Redshift that support both exploratory analytics and mission-critical reporting. You will implement data quality frameworks using Great Expectations or dbt tests, enforce governance policies with Apache Atlas or Collibra, and champion privacy-by-design principles to satisfy gaming regulators across multiple U.S. states and Canadian provinces. • Partner with data scientists to productionize machine-learning models that personalize promotions, detect fraud, and forecast player lifetime value. You will expose feature stores, design A/B testing infrastructure, and create real-time feature pipelines that feed online inference services at millisecond latency, directly influencing revenue and customer experience. • Collaborate with product managers and engineers to embed analytics hooks inside new gaming features, ensuring every click, spin, and bet is captured in a privacy-compliant manner. You will translate business questions into technical specifications, estimate effort with confidence intervals, and deliver iterative solutions that balance speed, cost, and accuracy. • Drive a culture of continuous improvement by automating repetitive tasks, writing comprehensive documentation, and mentoring junior engineers through pair programming and code reviews. You will establish SLAs/SLOs for data freshness and availability, monitor pipelines with Datadog or Prometheus, and participate in a blameless on-call rotation that keeps our 24/7 gaming ecosystem resilient. • Influence the technical roadmap by evaluating emerging technologies—such as lakehouse architectures, stream processing innovations, and privacy-enhancing computation—and presenting ROI-backed proposals to senior leadership. Your decisions will directly impact millions of daily active users and hundreds of millions in annual revenue. • Champion data democratization by building self-service analytics layers and intuitive APIs that empower non-technical stakeholders to answer their own questions safely. You will curate governed datasets in Amundsen or DataHub, craft SQL-based semantic layers, and deliver training sessions that elevate data literacy across Penn Interactive. • Ensure security and compliance by integrating encryption at rest and in transit, implementing fine-grained access controls with Ranger or Lake Formation, and conducting regular audits to meet PCI-DSS, SOX, and state gaming regulations. You will work closely with legal and compliance teams to translate regulatory requirements into technical controls. • Measure success through KPIs such as data pipeline reliability (>99.9%), query performance (<2s P95), and stakeholder NPS (>70). You will present quarterly business reviews to executives, showcasing how your data products increased marketing ROI, reduced fraud losses, and enabled new revenue streams. 🎯 Requirements • 3+ years of production experience building and operating large-scale data pipelines using Spark, Flink, or similar distributed compute engines • Expert-level SQL and proficiency in at least one of Python, Scala, or Java; familiarity with dbt, Airflow, and cloud data warehouses (Snowflake, BigQuery, or Redshift) • Deep understanding of data modeling, ETL/ELT design patterns, and real-time stream processing; experience with CDC tools like Debezium is a plus • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or equivalent practical experience; advanced degree preferred • Nice-to-have: hands-on experience with Terraform or CloudFormation, knowledge of gaming or sports betting data, and contributions to open-source data projects 🏖️ Benefits • Fully remote-first culture with flexible working hours and a one-time home-office stipend to create your ideal workspace • Comprehensive health, dental, vision, and mental-wellness coverage starting day one, plus a 401(k) with generous company match and immediate vesting • Annual professional-development budget of $3,500 for conferences, courses, and certifications, plus paid volunteer days to support causes you care about • Unlimited PTO policy with a minimum requirement of 15 days to ensure you actually unplug, plus company-wide mental-health days and a quarterly wellness stipend
