📋 Description

• Join the core engineering team that is architecting and delivering the next-generation financial platform that will become the beating heart of Chime’s member experience. Every line of code you write will directly affect how 38 million+ Americans move, save, and manage their money—making this one of the highest-impact engineering roles in fintech today.
• Own end-to-end design, development, and deployment of distributed services that must handle millions of real-time transactions per day with sub-second latency. You will model complex money-movement workflows, design idempotent APIs, and implement bullet-proof reconciliation engines that guarantee every cent is accounted for—even in the face of partial failures or network partitions.
• Champion reliability engineering practices by embedding SLOs, chaos testing, and automated runbooks into the platform’s DNA. You will instrument every service with golden signals, build self-healing mechanisms, and partner with SRE to ensure 99.99 % uptime—because our members depend on their paychecks arriving on time, every time.
• Build for security and compliance from day one. You will implement fine-grained RBAC, tokenization of PII, and real-time fraud-detection hooks that satisfy both PCI-DSS and banking regulators. Your code will be peer-reviewed by internal security architects and external auditors, giving you exposure to the highest standards of financial-grade security.
• Collaborate with product managers, data scientists, and risk analysts to translate regulatory requirements and member feedback into elegant technical solutions. You will whiteboard new features, run A/B experiments, and iterate rapidly—shipping to production multiple times per week while maintaining rigorous quality gates.
• Optimize for cost and scale. You will profile JVM or Go runtimes, tune Kafka streams, and right-size Kubernetes clusters so that the platform can grow 10× without breaking the budget. Expect to deep-dive into JVM GC logs, flame graphs, and AWS Cost Explorer to squeeze every ounce of efficiency.
• Mentor junior engineers and lead guilds on topics like event sourcing, CQRS, and domain-driven design. You will conduct architecture reviews, pair program, and write internal RFCs that raise the technical bar across the entire organization.
• Participate in a lightweight on-call rotation where you’ll triage alerts, conduct blameless post-mortems, and turn incidents into durable improvements. We believe that operational excellence is a shared responsibility, not a siloed function.
• Stay ahead of the curve by evaluating emerging technologies—whether it’s adopting Kotlin coroutines, experimenting with temporal.io for orchestration, or leveraging AWS Nitro Enclaves for secure computation. You will present findings to the broader team and drive adoption when the business case is clear.
• Work 100 % remote with a globally distributed team that spans San Francisco, New York, Toronto, and São Paulo. We default to asynchronous communication (Notion, Slack, Loom) and gather for quarterly off-sites to strengthen relationships and celebrate wins.

🎯 Requirements

• 4+ years of production experience building distributed, high-throughput backend services in Java, Kotlin, Scala, or Go
• Proven track record of owning mission-critical systems with strict SLAs/SLOs and participating in on-call rotations
• Deep understanding of relational databases (PostgreSQL or MySQL), distributed caching (Redis), and event streaming (Kafka or Pulsar)
• Nice-to-have: prior exposure to financial services, payments, or regulated environments (PCI-DSS, SOX, banking core integrations)
