- • At KOHO, we are on a mission to revolutionize financial services for Canadians, striving to eliminate hidden fees and predatory interest rates. Our goal is to empower individuals to spend wisely, save more effectively, and build lasting wealth through thoughtfully designed financial products. As a performance-driven organization with a deeply ingrained ethical compass, every action we take is aligned with our core mission of financially empowering a generation of Canadians.
- • KOHO fosters a unique work environment that moves beyond the traditional 9-5. We believe that true impact is achieved when individuals are trusted, empowered, and supported to perform at their best, without compromising their personal lives. Our philosophy centers on work-life integration, not just balance, which is reflected in our embrace of asynchronous collaboration, flexible working hours, and a remote-first setup built on a foundation of autonomy and high trust.
- • As KOHO enters a new phase of growth, characterized by increased efficiency, strategic intelligence, and deeper AI integration, we are committed to building for impact rather than succumbing to bureaucracy. If you are someone who thrives in an environment that champions clarity, embraces ownership, and encourages bold thinking, you will find yourself at home here.
- • The Data Platform team is seeking a talented Software Engineer II, Data, to play a pivotal role in the architecture, development, and ongoing optimization of the data infrastructure that underpins KOHO’s critical analytics, data science initiatives, and innovative product features. This role offers a significant opportunity to shape the future of data at KOHO.
- • Reporting directly to the Data Platform Development Manager, you will become an integral part of a dynamic team responsible for the continuous maintenance and strategic expansion of KOHO's sophisticated data engineering platform. Your contributions will be essential in ensuring the reliability, scalability, and performance of our data systems.
- • Key responsibilities will include actively practicing and embodying the KOHO values in all aspects of your work, ensuring alignment with our company culture and mission. You will be instrumental in gathering detailed requirements from stakeholders and subsequently implementing robust streaming and batch data pipelines that meet evolving business needs.
- • A core part of your role will involve the development and meticulous maintenance of batch data pipelines, leveraging key AWS services such as AWS Glue, Lambda, and the versatile Python programming language. This hands-on development will be crucial for processing and transforming large datasets efficiently.
- • You will foster strong collaborative relationships with business users, Data Analysts, and Data Scientists, working closely with them to address complex questions and provide solutions related to our data platform. This cross-functional collaboration is vital for ensuring our data infrastructure effectively supports diverse analytical and product requirements.
- • A significant aspect of your work will be the implementation of shared infrastructure components that are utilized by all services and teams across the KOHO platform. This focus on reusable and scalable infrastructure will enhance development velocity and consistency.
- • You will actively contribute to the continuous improvement of our internal standards for code style, maintainability, and overall best practices, helping to elevate the quality and efficiency of the engineering team.
- • This role also involves participating in a rotating on-call schedule, which includes the critical responsibility of incident management, ensuring the stability and availability of our data systems around the clock.
- • We are looking for individuals who possess 2-5 years of professional experience working with data, or equivalent internship/co-op experience, demonstrating a strong foundation in data engineering principles. This experience should be complemented by a high level of proficiency in Python and SQL, essential languages for data manipulation and analysis.
- • Hands-on experience with at least two core AWS services such as S3, Glue, Lambda, or Redshift is a prerequisite, showcasing your ability to work within a leading cloud environment. Familiarity with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools, particularly Terraform, is crucial for managing and provisioning our cloud resources effectively.
- • Experience with workflow orchestration tools like Airflow is highly desirable, enabling the management and scheduling of complex data pipelines. A solid understanding of data modeling techniques, distributed systems such as Spark, and common ETL/ELT design patterns is expected, forming the bedrock of effective data engineering.
- • You must be comfortable and adept at troubleshooting complex data issues within a production environment, ensuring minimal disruption and rapid resolution. A strong communicator, you should be able to articulate technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences, facilitating understanding and alignment across teams.
- • We encourage candidates familiar with AI-powered development tools like GitHub Copilot, Claude, or Cursor, as these can significantly enhance coding productivity and troubleshooting efficiency. While not mandatory, a proactive approach to leveraging these tools is a plus.
- • The ideal candidate will also possess a strong understanding of financial data or have a foundational knowledge of fintech concepts, which will be beneficial in navigating the specific domain of KOHO's operations. An AWS Certified Data Engineer – Associate certification is a highly valued asset, demonstrating a recognized level of expertise in AWS data services.
