- • As a Software Engineer on the Payments team at Whatnot, you will play a critical role in powering the platform’s global commerce engine by building and maintaining the systems that process billions of dollars in transactions annually, ensuring reliability, scalability, and security for buyers and sellers across North America and Europe.
- • You will design, develop, and deploy features that support a wide range of local and international payment methods, manage refunds and payouts at scale, and contribute to innovative solutions that enable seamless transactions in a fast-growing livestream shopping ecosystem.
- • Your work will directly impact Whatnot’s ability to scale globally, supporting the company’s mission to empower individuals to turn their passions into businesses through live commerce, with a focus on user-centric outcomes over technical perfection.
- • You will collaborate closely with product, engineering, and operations teams in a remote co-located environment, owning projects from inception to production and beyond, while mentoring peers and fostering inclusive, supportive team dynamics.
- • Day to day, you will write clean, maintainable code primarily in Python, Elixir, and JavaScript, debug complex distributed systems, optimize payment flows for performance and failure resilience, and participate in code reviews and architectural discussions that shape the long-term health of the payments infrastructure.
- • You will engage in dogfooding the Whatnot app as both a buyer and seller to deeply understand user needs, contribute to incident response and post-mortems, and continuously learn new technologies and domains as the team evolves its stack to meet growing demands.
- • You will operate with high autonomy and strong ownership instincts, making judicious trade-offs between speed, reliability, and complexity, and advocating for solutions that prioritize user experience and long-term system sustainability.
- • You will be part of a mission-driven, fast-moving team that values curiosity, bias toward action, and close connection to users, where your contributions are recognized not just for shipping features but for enabling trust and growth in a new category of commerce.
- • The team operates from hubs in Dublin, Ireland, and other global locations, offering flexibility to work remotely or in-office with an emphasis on in-person collaboration for planning and problem-solving, requiring you to be within commuting distance of the Dublin office.
- • You will grow your expertise in distributed systems, payment processing, international commerce regulations, and scalable backend architectures, while developing leadership and mentorship skills through hands-on project ownership and team collaboration.
- • You will have the opportunity to shape the future of live commerce by building foundational financial infrastructure that supports hundreds of product categories and millions of transactions, gaining rare experience in a high-impact, high-growth startup environment.
🎯 Requirements
- • 3-5+ years of software development experience building scalable systems that handle millions of users
- • Proficiency or willingness to work with Python, Elixir, and JavaScript (expertise in all not required)
- • Strong product instincts — prioritizing user needs over technical elegance
- • Proven ability to own projects end-to-end, from inception to production and beyond
- • Excellent problem-solving skills and comfort working autonomously without detailed direction
- • Openness to contributing to frontend work when needed
- • Rapid learning ability and adaptability to new technologies and domains
🏖️ Benefits
- • Generous holiday and time-off policy
- • Comprehensive health insurance including medical, dental, and vision
- • Work-from-home support with home office setup allowance and monthly stipend for cell phone and internet
- • Care benefits: monthly wellness allowance, annual childcare allowance, and lifetime support for family planning (adoption, fertility, etc.)
- • International pension plans
- • Monthly allowance to dogfood the Whatnot app as both a buyer and seller
- • 16 weeks of paid parental leave plus one month gradual return to work
- • Equal Opportunity Employer commitment to diversity and inclusion
