Full Job Description
đź“‹ Description
- • Own the end-to-end sourcing strategy for industrial supplies and construction materials critical to Starship, Falcon, and Dragon programs—everything from high-grade stainless-steel plates and cryogenic piping to specialty fasteners, composites, and safety equipment—ensuring that every nut, bolt, and beam arrives on time, on spec, and on budget.
- • Build and continuously refine a global supplier network capable of scaling from prototype quantities to thousands of tons per month, negotiating multi-year framework agreements that lock in capacity, quality, and cost while protecting SpaceX against commodity volatility and geopolitical risk.
- • Translate engineering drawings, material specs, and build schedules into precise RFQs, driving competitive bidding events that balance technical compliance, lead-time compression, and total cost of ownership; present clear trade-off analyses to cross-functional stakeholders so program leadership can make fast, data-backed decisions.
- • Partner daily with Propulsion, Structures, Launch, and Starbase Construction teams to forecast demand spikes, identify long-lead items, and pre-empt bottlenecks; your dashboards will be the single source of truth that keeps launch cadence on track and Mars timelines achievable.
- • Lead supplier qualification audits on five continents, verifying AS9100/ISO 9001 quality systems, ITAR compliance, and ESG standards; when gaps surface, you’ll craft corrective-action plans and mentor suppliers through rapid capability uplifts that turn red flags into green lights.
- • Drive cost-down initiatives through should-cost modeling, value-engineering workshops, and reverse auctions, targeting 5–10 % year-over-year savings without compromising safety or performance; every dollar you save is a dollar that can be reinvested in Raptor engines or heat-shield tiles.
- • Champion digital transformation by implementing e-sourcing platforms, automated bid-scoring algorithms, and blockchain-based traceability for critical alloys; your innovations will compress sourcing cycles from weeks to days and give engineers real-time visibility into material pedigree.
- • Manage risk in an environment where a single missing O-ring can scrub a launch; maintain dual sourcing for A-class items, negotiate expedited freight contingencies, and stand up war-room protocols that mobilize teams within minutes of a supplier disruption.
- • Mentor junior buyers and interns, transferring deep category expertise in metals, chemicals, electrical, and construction trades; your playbooks will become the institutional knowledge that powers the next generation of SpaceX supply-chain leaders.
- • Report directly to the Director of Global Supply Chain, presenting monthly KPIs on cost avoidance, supplier OTIF (on-time-in-full), and quality PPM; your insights will influence board-level decisions on factory expansions, vertical integration, and interplanetary logistics strategy.
🎯 Requirements
- • 5+ years of strategic sourcing experience in industrial supplies, construction materials, or heavy manufacturing; aerospace or high-volume automotive background strongly preferred.
- • Demonstrated success negotiating master service agreements >$50 M and managing supplier performance against tight launch or production schedules.
- • Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain, Engineering, Business, or related field; MBA or CPSM/CSCP certification a plus.
- • Expert proficiency in Excel, SQL, or Python for spend analytics; hands-on experience with Coupa, SAP Ariba, or similar e-sourcing suites.
- • Ability to travel up to 25 % domestically and internationally, including to Starbase, TX and Cape Canaveral, FL.
🏖️ Benefits
- • Equity in SpaceX via stock options—share directly in the financial upside of making life multiplanetary.
- • 100 % company-paid medical, dental, and vision coverage for you and dependents from day one.
- • 16 weeks of fully paid parental leave, plus annual stipend for on-site childcare at Hawthorne and Starbase facilities.
- • Flexible PTO policy and remote-first culture with quarterly off-site summits in locations like Boca Chica, Cape Canaveral, or even mission control in Hawthorne.
