- • We are seeking a highly impactful Sr. Director, Head of Design, Consumer to lead and elevate the user experience for our rapidly growing retail user base. This role is pivotal in defining how millions of users interact with crypto and investment products, ensuring they are trustworthy, modern, and effortless. This is a hands-on leadership position, not merely an oversight role, for an individual who is eager to shape strategy while remaining deeply involved in the day-to-day design execution.
- • The Consumer business at Kraken encompasses critical product areas, including the core Trading experience (Kraken App and retail web), Payments (our new money app), Earn (staking and yield products), Equities (a platform for traditional and tokenized equities), and Inky (our gamified on-chain trading app). In this dynamic and fast-paced environment, you will be instrumental in shaping experiences that empower users to trade, invest, stake, spend, and grow their wealth.
- • Your primary responsibility will be to define and communicate a compelling design vision for the Consumer portfolio, establishing a long-term UX strategy that resonates across all product lines. You will bridge the complex world of crypto with the intuitive expectations of finance, creating seamless experiences for both crypto newcomers and sophisticated investors. This involves translating a strong point of view from crypto, wealth management, trading, or fintech into high-quality, user-centric product designs.
- • You will lead a talented team of approximately 10 designers, fostering a culture of consistent excellence, accountability, and rigorous critique. This leadership extends to mentoring, coaching, and growing individual designers, ensuring they are equipped to deliver exceptional work. You will collaborate closely with Product Managers and Engineers, acting as a strategic partner to shape problem definitions, refine hypotheses, and ensure the right problems are being solved with the appropriate level of ambition.
- • A key objective is to transform the execution quality across the Consumer product suite, driving a significant improvement in usability, clarity, and overall polish. This involves not only setting the standard but also actively participating in the design process, diving into user flows, refining interaction patterns, and making critical UX decisions. Your direct engagement will elevate the quality of the work produced by the team.
- • You will be responsible for building scalable design processes and systems that replace ad-hoc workflows. This includes establishing consistent methodologies for design discovery, iteration, critique, and delivery, enabling the team to operate with greater efficiency and predictability. Furthermore, you will drive faster experimentation by promoting more prototyping, user testing, and tighter learning loops, empowering the team to innovate and iterate rapidly.
- • Collaboration with engineering is paramount. You will work closely with engineering teams to ensure design intent is accurately translated into the final product, fostering a partnership where both design and engineering move quickly and intelligently together. This ensures a cohesive and high-quality user experience from concept to launch.

🎯 Requirements
- • Proven experience leading and scaling product design teams of 8-15 individuals in high-growth, product-led environments.
- • Deep domain expertise in cryptocurrency or trading, coupled with practical experience in wealth management, investment, or fintech products, demonstrating an understanding of trust, risk, and financial UX nuances.
- • A strong, well-articulated point of view on design strategy and its direct impact on product development, extending beyond visual aesthetics to encompass user flows and interaction design.
- • Hands-on design proficiency, with the ability to actively contribute in Figma, model excellent craft, and elevate design work from good to exceptional.
- • Strong product intuition and the ability to partner with Product Managers as a peer, challenging assumptions, reframing problems, and clarifying priorities.
- • Demonstrated operational rigor in establishing systems and processes that consistently raise the quality bar, even without direct personal involvement in every task.
- • Outstanding communication skills, characterized by clarity, directness, and persuasiveness when engaging with executives, peers, and individual contributors.
- • High judgment and pragmatism in assessing scope and making tradeoffs without compromising quality.
