• Zapier is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Software Engineer, Workflow (Backend) to join our dynamic Workflow Zone. This role is pivotal in shaping the future of our core automation platform, which empowers millions of users to streamline their work. You will be a key contributor to the Runner team, responsible for the robust and high-performance execution engine that powers Zapier’s automation workflows.
• The Workflow Zone is the heart of Zapier’s automation magic, encompassing the entire product experience and execution engine for creating, running, and debugging workflows, known as Zaps. Our mission is to build powerful, flexible, and intuitive tools that enable individuals and teams to automate their work with unparalleled speed and confidence. As automation use cases become increasingly complex, especially for our enterprise clients, we are continuously evolving the platform. This includes enhancing the resilience and sophistication of workflow authoring experiences, expanding our execution capabilities with advanced logic primitives, integrating AI-powered tools for both creation and troubleshooting, and significantly improving the overall reliability, observability, and control of the system.
• The Runner team specifically focuses on the critical task of reliably executing Zaps at scale and with exceptional speed. We are dedicated to building and maintaining the core infrastructure that underpins millions of daily workflow executions. Our primary objectives include ensuring high availability, optimizing for low latency, and implementing robust scaling strategies to accommodate Zapier’s rapid growth and the increasing volume of automated tasks.
• In this Sr. Backend Engineer role, you will be instrumental in developing and maintaining Zapier’s execution engine, ensuring its scalability to handle millions of daily runs efficiently and reliably. You will focus on enhancing system performance, minimizing latency across all operations, and strengthening our failure handling mechanisms to ensure maximum uptime and user trust. A significant part of your role will involve designing and implementing new execution primitives that form the backbone of our reliable automation capabilities. Furthermore, you will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including infrastructure, product management, and other platform engineering teams, to contribute to and influence core system design decisions.
• This is a foundational role within Zapier’s platform layer, perfectly suited for engineers who thrive on deep technical challenges and are passionate about shipping resilient, high-scale services. 🎯 Requirements

• 5+ years of professional software development experience, with at least 2 years in a senior-level role.
• Strong backend development experience, with a preference for Python/Django and/or TypeScript/Node.js, focusing on building reliable, scalable, and observable services.
• Familiarity with relational databases (e.g., PostgreSQL, MySQL) and experience in data modeling, querying, and optimization.
• Proven ability to lead complex technical projects, including owning design decisions, managing trade-offs, and guiding implementation across multiple contributors.
