Staff Backend Software Engineer (Builders)

📋 Description

• • Architect and own the next-generation back-end services that power Relevance AI’s agent, tool, and workforce builders—core products used daily by thousands of builders at companies like Canva, Databricks, and Autodesk.
• • Lead the design, implementation, and operation of scalable, fault-tolerant APIs and micro-services that handle millions of workflow executions, real-time agent orchestration, and secure multi-tenant data access.
• • Translate complex product requirements into elegant system designs, balancing speed of iteration with long-term maintainability; you’ll write RFCs, review architecture proposals, and set the technical bar for the entire Builders squad.
• • Champion observability and reliability: instrument services with metrics, tracing, and alerting; define SLOs; run blameless post-mortems; and ensure 99.9 % uptime for mission-critical paths that customers trust to run their businesses.
• • Drive cross-team technical initiatives—such as unified authentication, schema evolution, or cost-aware autoscaling—that raise the engineering standards across Relevance AI and reduce friction for every squad shipping AI features.
• • Mentor senior and mid-level engineers through pair programming, design reviews, and career coaching; foster a culture of ownership where each teammate feels empowered to propose bold ideas and ship them to production within hours.
• • Collaborate daily with product managers, designers, and go-to-market leaders to prioritize customer impact, refine roadmaps, and translate user feedback into actionable engineering tasks that deliver measurable value.
• • Experiment with cutting-edge AI infrastructure—vector databases, LLM orchestration layers, prompt-caching systems—and productionize the patterns that let non-experts create reliable AI agents in minutes, not months.
• • Optimize performance and cost at scale: profile Node.js runtimes, tune AWS Lambda concurrency, and leverage Terraform to spin up ephemeral GPU clusters that keep our inference spend predictable while delighting users with lightning-fast agent responses.
• • Uphold rigorous security and compliance standards (SOC 2, ISO 27001) by embedding security reviews into every pull request, automating dependency scanning, and partnering with our security guild to safeguard customer data.
• • Contribute to open-source projects and internal libraries that the wider engineering community can adopt, reinforcing Relevance AI’s reputation as a thought leader in the AI tooling space.
