- • This 100% remote position (California residents only, Sacramento area preferred) offers the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to a hybrid organization that blends the impact of a nonprofit, the agility of a startup, and the scale of a state agency, all while upholding the Foundation’s commitment to equity, shared leadership, and professional growth.
- • Provides advice and guidance to Foundation programs and staff on legal matters including nonprofit corporate governance and compliance, data privacy and security, intellectual property, risk management, and contract compliance, under the direction of the VP, Legal Affairs.
- • Conducts legal research, drafts research memoranda, and performs thorough legal review of contracts, ensuring alignment with Foundation policies and applicable state and federal laws.
- • Supports the Contracts department by creating, revising, amending, and assisting in the negotiation of contract terms, ensuring adherence to the Foundation’s Contracts Policy and best practices in contractual risk allocation.
- • Builds and cultivates internal and external relationships, acting as an organizational brand ambassador and providing business development insights where opportunities arise to further the Foundation’s strategic goals.
- • Manages multiple priorities independently, demonstrating ownership, accountability, and strong project management skills to deliver high-quality legal work on time with minimal supervision.
- • Collaborates with cross-functional teams across philanthropy, technology, communications, and higher education to integrate legal considerations into program development and implementation.
- • Contributes to a culture of continuous learning and shared leadership, leveraging professional development opportunities to grow expertise while supporting organizational resilience and innovation.
- • Helps safeguard the Foundation’s reputation and operational integrity by proactively identifying legal risks and recommending preventive measures that protect students, staff, and institutional partners across California’s community college ecosystem.
🎯 Requirements
- • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
- • Active and in good standing license to practice law in the State of California.
- • Minimum of 2+ years of relevant legal experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience in areas such as contract law, nonprofit compliance, data privacy, or risk management.
- • Proficiency with remote work technologies including Zoom, Microsoft Office Suite (Teams, Outlook), Salesforce Lightning, Google Suite, and other database platforms.
- • Demonstrated ability to manage priorities, work independently, and deliver quality legal products with limited supervision.
- • Strong commitment to mission-driven work, equity, and a passion for improving outcomes for students and communities served by the California Community Colleges system.

- • Comprehensive health benefits including medical, dental, and vision plans, Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs), Health Savings Accounts (HSAs), and access to an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) and wellness offerings.
- • Access to the CalPERS retirement program, with optional participation in 403(b) and 457 retirement plans for long-term financial security.
- • Tuition reimbursement support for continued education and professional development.
