Full Job Description

đź“‹ Description

  • • Design and own the technical architecture of Tilt’s Databricks Data Warehouse, including ingestion, storage, compute, orchestration, governance, and observability, serving as the primary architectural reviewer for the team.
  • • Build, scale, and optimize secure, self-service frameworks for batch and streaming data pipelines to eliminate repetitive, manual requests and ensure consistent, reusable patterns across teams.
  • • Treat the data platform as production software by defining and enforcing SLOs, owning data lineage and observability tooling, and leading incident triage and root-cause analysis to implement durable fixes.
  • • Design and implement governance and multi-tenancy controls as first-class features, including least-privilege access, auditing, cost monitoring, and privacy-aware data patterns across app-team schemas and multiple Databricks workspaces.
  • • Automate and harden data infrastructure and CI/CD pipelines to enable safe, scalable changes to the platform without introducing risk or downtime.
  • • Raise the team’s technical standards through rigorous design and code reviews, mentorship, and by setting adoption-worthy patterns that are embraced for their quality, not compliance.
  • • Make documentation a mandatory, first-class deliverable for every pattern or system built, ensuring analysts, data scientists, and AI agents can use the platform without needing to ask for help.
  • • Lead the evolution of data infrastructure tooling using Python to develop internal systems for loading data from Databricks, Azure Event Hubs, and managing infrastructure via Terraform.
  • • Operate with a pattern-first mindset: every project must leave behind a reusable, documented, and scalable system that prevents the same problem from being solved again.
  • • Collaborate with Analytics, Data Science, and application teams to understand their needs and remove bottlenecks that slow down company-wide decision-making.
  • • Act as a senior individual contributor without direct reports, influencing technical direction through expertise, collaboration, and architectural leadership.
  • • Participate in company offsites at least twice per year, traveling to reconnect with the global team in person.

🎯 Requirements

  • • 8+ years of data engineering or data platform experience, including significant time as a senior individual contributor building reusable infrastructure used by multiple teams at scale.
  • • Demonstrated technical leadership in setting architecture direction, reviewing designs, and mentoring engineers on a data platform team.
  • • Strong software-engineering fundamentals in Python (or another object-oriented language), including production-grade code, testing, CI/CD, and Infrastructure-as-Code (Terraform or similar) on Azure, AWS, or GCP.
  • • Proven experience with data governance, security, and multi-tenancy — including least-privilege access, auditing, lineage tracking, and privacy-aware design.
  • • Experience using AI-powered development tools (e.g., Claude, Augment) to enhance productivity, code quality, and team collaboration.
  • • Ability to operate remotely across global time zones and contribute to a distributed team with high autonomy.

🏖️ Benefits

  • • Virtual-first teamwork with WFH office reimbursement.
  • • Competitive compensation packages and generous equity.
  • • Comprehensive health plans with substantial global subsidies.
  • • Direct exposure to leadership and rapid recognition of good ideas.
  • • Paid global company offsites twice per year, including past locations like Vail, San Diego, and Mexico City.
  • • Growth opportunities tied to contributions, not rigid promotion timelines.
