- • As a Staff Database Administrator at Harvey AI Inc., you will define and evolve the database infrastructure strategy for a global legal AI platform, ensuring reliability, performance, and scalability across a multi-region PostgreSQL fleet that supports 1000+ customers in 58+ countries.
- • You will own end-to-end migration governance, drive architecture decisions for high-availability systems, lead incident response, and build self-service tooling that empowers engineering teams to move fast without compromising data safety or compliance.
- • You’ll partner with Principal and Staff Engineers on infrastructure roadmap while maintaining deep hands-on expertise—diagnosing replication lag at 2am, tuning vacuum and connection settings, and setting organizational standards for database operations.
- • Harvey’s engineering team operates with intensity, ownership, and customer obsession in San Francisco, using an in-person work model to solve complex problems in AI-driven professional services at a true inflection point of growth.
- • In this role, you will shape the database engineering function from the ground up—defining hiring standards, mentoring engineers, establishing operational models, and influencing technical direction across teams through RFCs, standards, and strategic partnerships with security, compliance, and leadership.
- • You will gain unparalleled experience scaling a mission-critical data layer in a high-growth AI company, mastering advanced PostgreSQL internals, multi-region replication, zero-downtime upgrades, and compliance frameworks like SOC 2 and GDPR—while building systems that become the default for safe, fast database evolution across the organization.
🎯 Requirements
- • 10+ years of hands-on experience in database administration, reliability engineering, or infrastructure engineering with PostgreSQL as the primary database, including staff-level impact such as setting cross-team standards and driving organizational change.
- • Expert-level PostgreSQL knowledge, including WAL mechanics, vacuum tuning, logical/physical replication, partitioning strategies, and the ability to debug complex production issues that others cannot resolve.
- • Proven track record designing and implementing migration governance frameworks—including CI gate checks, automated rollbacks, dry-runs, schema diff previews, and fleet-wide deployment sequencing that make safe migrations the default.
- • Experience architecting and operating database infrastructure for multi-region, high-availability environments, including replication topologies, failover automation, and data consistency trade-offs at fleet scale.
- • Proficiency with cloud database services (AWS RDS/Aurora, GCP Cloud SQL, Azure Database for PostgreSQL) and infrastructure-as-code tools like Terraform or Pulumi, combined with deep observability expertise using Datadog, pganalyze, or custom instrumentation.
- • Strong communication skills, enabling clear technical dialogue with both senior engineering leaders (e.g., VP of Engineering) and junior developers on topics ranging from architecture decisions to migration risks.
