Full Job Description
đź“‹ Description
- • Own the end-to-end design, modelling, and characterisation of optical subsystems including laser interferometry configurations, beam delivery systems, optical path optimisation, and stray light management for non-invasive neuromonitoring devices.
- • Drive experimental validation of optical performance through precision alignment, sensitivity testing, and signal-to-noise analysis under clinically relevant conditions.
- • Develop and maintain high-fidelity optical simulation models using Zemax, COMSOL, or equivalent tools, translating simulation outputs into manufacturable design specifications and tolerancing requirements.
- • Collaborate with photonic component suppliers to co-develop custom laser diodes, photonic integrated circuits (PICs), and photodetector arrays tailored to CoMind’s proprietary sensing platform.
- • Integrate optical subsystems with mechanical, electronic, and embedded software components, ensuring coherent system-level performance across all interfaces.
- • Contribute to design reviews, risk analyses, and verification and validation activities in compliance with ISO 14971, ISO 13485, and IEC 60601-1 regulatory standards for medical devices.
- • Author and review technical documentation including optical design specifications, test protocols, and regulatory evidence packages for FDA and CE submissions.
- • Identify, evaluate, and prototype emerging optical components, materials, and techniques to enhance sensing capabilities and improve manufacturability of the photonic platform.
- • Work cross-functionally with research, product development, and manufacturing teams to transition prototypes into scalable, high-yield production hardware.
- • Embrace AI as a core part of daily work, leveraging it to enhance design workflows, automate analysis, and accelerate innovation across optical engineering tasks.
- • Work in-office at least four days per week from either the Bristol or London (Kings Cross) office, with one flexible remote day per week.
- • Participate in regular technical reviews and contribute to the continuous improvement of optical engineering processes and documentation standards.
- • Maintain rigorous attention to detail in all aspects of optical system development, from component selection to final validation, ensuring clinical safety and reliability.
- • Support the integration of fibre optics, beamsplitters, optical coatings, and custom photodetectors into compact, robust systems suitable for clinical deployment.
- • Apply deep expertise in coherent optical sensing and laser interferometry to solve complex challenges in non-invasive physiological parameter measurement.
- • Ensure all optical designs are manufacturable at scale, with clear design-for-manufacture (DFM) considerations integrated from early concept stages.
- • Contribute to the company’s mission of improving global brain health through innovative, non-invasive neuromonitoring technology.
🎯 Requirements
- • 10+ years of experience in optical engineering with hands-on design and validation of precision optical systems
- • Deep expertise in laser interferometry, coherent optical sensing, or closely related optical measurement techniques
- • Proficiency with optical simulation tools (Zemax, COMSOL, or equivalent) and experience translating simulations into validated hardware
- • Experience developing custom photonic components such as laser diodes, PICs, or photodetector arrays
- • Strong experimental background in precision optical alignment, characterisation, and troubleshooting of complex optical assemblies
- • Experience working within a regulated industry (medical devices, defence, semiconductor) with familiarity with ISO 14971 and design control processes
🏖️ Benefits
- • Company equity plan so all employees share in the success of the company
- • Salary-sacrifice pension scheme
- • Private medical, dental and vision insurance (medical history disregarded)
- • Group life assurance at 4x annual income
- • Comprehensive mental health support, including unlimited access to 1:1 sessions with trained professionals
- • Unlimited holiday allowance (+ bank holidays) and one week of remote working per quarter
- • Lunch voucher (£10) every day for JustEat and free dinner on days working late
- • Twice weekly deliveries of fresh fruit and an extensive selection of snacks and drinks
- • YuLife subscription, allowing daily steps and meditation to be turned into store discounts
