đź“‹ Description
- • Lead end-to-end design strategy and execution for Gusto’s contractor products, guiding the evolution of foundational workflows used by small and medium business owners and independent contractors.
- • Partner cross-functionally with Product, Engineering, Research, Data, Legal, Compliance, Operations, and Support to define problem spaces, align on priorities, and deliver solutions that balance customer needs with business objectives.
- • Translate qualitative research insights and quantitative data into intuitive, scalable, and accessible user experiences that support diverse contractor and employer workflows.
- • Champion inclusive and thoughtful design by actively participating in design reviews, providing constructive feedback, and contributing to the evolution of Gusto’s design standards and platform quality.
- • Apply AI fluency directly to design practice—using AI tools to rapidly prototype ideas, accelerate customer feedback cycles, and improve the quality and speed of contractor-facing product experiences.
- • Mentor and support fellow designers through thoughtful critique, knowledge sharing, and active participation in design community initiatives across Gusto.
- • Drive strategic planning and long-term vision for the contractor product area, influencing product direction from concept through launch and iterative refinement.
- • Own the design leadership role as an individual contributor for the Contractors team, ensuring cohesive, high-quality experiences across domestic and international contractor hiring, payment, and management systems.
- • Collaborate with stakeholders to navigate ambiguity and translate complex regulatory, operational, and user needs into clear, actionable design outcomes.
- • Ensure all designs meet accessibility standards and consider the full spectrum of user contexts, including non-technical users managing payroll and compliance for the first time.
- • Maintain alignment with Gusto’s mission to empower small businesses by designing experiences that simplify the complexities of contractor management.
- • Engage with AI tools as a core part of daily workflow, not as an optional add-on, to enhance efficiency, creativity, and decision-making in the design process.
- • Represent the design team in cross-functional leadership meetings, advocating for user-centered solutions and design excellence in product development decisions.

- • Proven ability to lead design direction at the product level and influence cross-functional partners
- • Strong collaboration experience with partners in product, engineering, research, and data
- • A portfolio that demonstrates high-quality interaction and visual design with thoughtful consideration for accessibility and end-to-end user experiences
- • Comfort translating ambiguity into clear design decisions and outcomes
- • Demonstrated AI fluency in your design practice, using AI to prototype quickly, shorten feedback loops, and improve product experiences
🏖️ Benefits

- • Hybrid work model with 2–3 days per week in-office for employees based in Denver, San Francisco, New York, Los Angeles, Seattle, or Toronto
- • Access to Gusto’s Total Rewards philosophy including comprehensive benefits and equity
- • Opportunity to work in an AI-native design organization with tools and expectations integrated into daily practice
