đź“‹ Description
- • Join WorkWhile as a Staff Software Engineer, Backend, and play a pivotal role in revolutionizing the future of work for millions of hourly employees. At WorkWhile, we are dedicated to empowering workers with better living wages, more predictable schedules, and essential benefits, while simultaneously providing businesses with a seamless and efficient way to access high-quality talent. Our AI-powered platform is at the forefront of this transformation, disrupting the massive $650 billion staffing and recruiting market. As a Staff Software Engineer, you will be instrumental in architecting, building, and scaling the robust backend systems that underpin our core product flows, ensuring reliability, performance, and long-term maintainability.
- • You will take ownership of complex backend systems, guiding them from initial architectural design and data modeling through to implementation, rigorous testing, and ensuring their ongoing operational excellence and scalability. This involves not just writing code, but deeply understanding the intricate dependencies and potential impact of your work on the entire platform and its users. Your contributions will directly influence the stability and growth of a platform that is already experiencing 10x growth and is backed by prominent investors like Khosla Ventures.
- • Collaboration is key. You will partner closely with engineering leadership, product managers, and designers to define and shape the technical direction of our products. This includes translating ambiguous business requirements and user needs into well-defined technical specifications and durable, scalable solutions. Your ability to think critically, propose innovative approaches, and guide technical discussions will be crucial in navigating the complexities of a rapidly evolving tech landscape.
- • As a senior member of the engineering team, you will lead high-impact initiatives that often span multiple services and involve cross-functional collaboration. This leadership extends to setting clear technical direction, proactively identifying and mitigating risks, and unblocking other engineers to ensure project success. You will be a key driver in elevating the overall technical quality and best practices across the backend codebase, fostering an environment of continuous improvement and innovation.
- • A significant part of your role will involve raising the bar for system design, correctness, and operational excellence. This means championing best practices in areas such as API design, data integrity, fault tolerance, and performance optimization. You will be expected to contribute to architectural reviews, provide constructive feedback on designs, and ensure that our systems are not only functional but also resilient and efficient under load.
- • You will act as a force multiplier for the engineering team. This involves actively mentoring and guiding junior and mid-level engineers, sharing your expertise, and helping them develop their technical skills and decision-making capabilities. Through code reviews, design discussions, and one-on-one interactions, you will foster a culture of learning and growth, helping to elevate the technical proficiency of the entire team. Your experience in making thoughtful trade-offs, communicating complex technical concepts clearly, and demonstrating ownership at scale will be invaluable.
- • We are looking for engineers who are passionate about solving challenging problems and have a deep care for the long-term health and maintainability of the systems they build. This role offers the opportunity to make a significant impact on a product that is fundamentally changing how frontline work is done, improving the lives of millions of workers. If you are excited by the prospect of shaping the future of work and thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced environment, we encourage you to apply.
🎯 Requirements
- • Significant experience designing, building, and maintaining complex backend systems, including APIs, data models, and distributed services, preferably with Python or a similar language.
- • Proven track record of owning technical systems or product areas end-to-end, demonstrating the ability to drive initiatives from conception through to successful deployment and ongoing operation, especially within growing or evolving codebases.
- • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in ambiguous environments, with a strong capacity to define problems, explore multiple solutions, and guide teams toward pragmatic and effective technical decisions.
- • Deep understanding and commitment to system correctness, reliability, and long-term maintainability, with the ability to balance these principles against immediate product needs and business objectives.
- • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to articulate technical concepts clearly and influence technical direction across engineering teams.
- • Experience mentoring other engineers and contributing to the elevation of team-wide technical quality and best practices (formal management experience is not a requirement).
🏖️ Benefits
- • Hybrid work culture with access to office hubs in San Francisco, New York, Seattle, and Toronto, offering flexibility in how and where you work.
- • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage to support your health and well-being.
- • Generous flexible time off policy, allowing you to take the time you need to rest and recharge.
- • 401(k) plan with an employer match, helping you save for your future.
- • Work From Home stipend to help you create a productive and comfortable home office environment.
