- • As a Staff Software Engineer, Backend at WorkWhile Inc., you will play a pivotal role in shaping the technical foundation of a mission-driven platform that is transforming the $650 billion staffing and recruiting industry by enabling fairer, more flexible work opportunities for hourly workers across America. Your work will directly impact the lives of millions by ensuring the reliability, scalability, and intelligence of systems that power same-day pay, shift matching, telehealth access, and upskilling pathways.
- • You will own and evolve complex backend systems that power core product flows, from architecture and data modelling to reliability and long-term scalability, ensuring that the platform can handle growing demand while maintaining high performance and correctness.
- • You will partner closely with engineering leadership, product, and design to shape technical direction and translate ambiguous problems into durable solutions, acting as a strategic thinker who bridges business needs with technical execution.
- • You will lead high-impact initiatives that span multiple services or teams, setting clear technical direction and unblocking others by establishing standards, anticipating risks, and enabling cross-functional collaboration.
- • You will raise the bar on system design, correctness, and operational excellence across the backend codebase, championing best practices in testing, observability, and resilience to reduce technical debt and increase system trustworthiness.
- • You will act as a force multiplier for the team: reviewing designs, mentoring engineers, and helping others make strong technical decisions, thereby elevating the overall technical maturity and cohesion of the engineering organization.
- • You will contribute to our engineering culture by modelling thoughtful tradeoffs, clear communication, and ownership at scale, fostering an environment where learning, accountability, and innovation thrive.
- • You will work within a small and mighty team of senior engineers from top-tier companies like Rippling, Stripe, DoorDash, and Faire, where user-centricity, competence, speed, and fun are core values, and independence is balanced with strong collaboration.
- • You will help define and evolve engineering standards and best practices as the team grows, leaving a lasting impact on how WorkWhile builds software — not just what it builds.
🎯 Requirements
- • Significant experience designing and building backend systems in Python (or similar), including APIs, data models, and distributed services
- • A strong track record of owning technical systems or product areas end-to-end, especially in growing or evolving codebases
- • Deep care for system correctness, reliability, and long-term maintainability, balanced with real product needs
- • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to influence technical direction across the team
- • Experience mentoring engineers and elevating team-wide technical quality (formal management experience not required)
