Full Job Description
đź“‹ Description
- • As a Staff Software Engineer on the Storage Engineering team at Cloudera, you will play a pivotal role in designing and implementing core features for Apache Ozone and Apache Ratis, contributing directly to the evolution of a massively scalable distributed object store that addresses the limitations of legacy systems like HDFS and empowers enterprises to manage petabytes of data with unmatched performance and reliability.
- • You will work on the foundational storage and access layers of the Cloudera Data Platform, ensuring high availability, strong consistency, and efficient data replication across thousands of nodes, while also contributing to the ongoing development and enhancement of HDFS — one of the most widely deployed distributed storage systems in the world, used by over a thousand Cloudera customers globally.
- • Your day-to-day responsibilities include writing clean, production-quality Java code, designing distributed algorithms for consensus and storage protocols, conducting code reviews, debugging complex system-level issues, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to integrate new features into enterprise-grade data platforms.
- • You will engage in performance tuning and bottleneck analysis, leveraging deep knowledge of computer architecture, storage subsystems, networking, and I/O optimization to ensure Ozone scales efficiently under extreme workloads, supporting tens of billions of objects with low latency and high throughput.
- • You will contribute to open-source innovation by participating in the Apache Ozone and Ratis communities, proposing design improvements, submitting patches, and helping shape the future of distributed storage through peer review and technical leadership.
- • You will collaborate closely with product managers, data engineers, and platform teams to align technical roadmaps with customer needs, ensuring that the storage layer enables advanced analytics, AI/ML workloads, and hybrid/multi-cloud deployments for Fortune 500 enterprises.
- • You will mentor junior engineers, advocate for engineering excellence, and help establish best practices in distributed systems design, testing, and observability, fostering a culture of quality and innovation within the Storage Engineering team.
- • You will gain deep expertise in cutting-edge distributed consensus protocols (RAFT, Paxos), scalable storage architectures, and cloud-native data infrastructure — positioning yourself as a technical leader in one of the most critical and evolving domains in enterprise data technology.
- • This role offers the rare opportunity to build foundational infrastructure that powers the data strategies of global industry leaders, seeing your work directly impact how organizations derive insights from data at scale, with visibility across open-source communities and enterprise customers worldwide.
🎯 Requirements
- • BS, MS, or Ph.D. in Computer Science OR equivalent industry experience (Bachelors/Masters + 6+ years of relevant software engineering experience)
- • Strong backend engineering expertise with advanced proficiency in Java, including deep understanding of data structures, algorithms, and object-oriented design principles
- • Proven experience designing and developing large-scale, distributed systems with strong grasp of scaling, replication, consistency models (strong/eventual), fault tolerance, and high availability patterns
- • Hands-on experience with system software design, including knowledge of computer architecture, storage hierarchies, networking (TCP/IP, RDMA), and I/O subsystems
- • Clean coding habits, meticulous attention to detail, and a demonstrable focus on code quality, testability, and maintainability in production environments
- • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills, with ability to convey complex technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
🏖️ Benefits
- • Generous Paid Time Off (PTO) policy supporting rest, recovery, and personal time
- • Flexible Work-From-Home (WFH) policy enabling remote work autonomy and geographic flexibility
- • Dedicated Mental & Physical Wellness programs including access to counseling, fitness resources, and wellness stipends
- • Phone and Internet Reimbursement program to support home office connectivity and productivity
- • Access to Continued Career Development through learning platforms, conferences, certifications, and internal mobility opportunities
- • Comprehensive Benefits and Competitive Packages including health, dental, vision, life insurance, and retirement savings plans
- • Paid Volunteer Time (VTO) to support community engagement and social impact initiatives
- • Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) fostering inclusion, belonging, and professional networking across diverse identities and interests
