Full Job Description
đź“‹ Description
- • At Luma Labs, we are at the forefront of a new era of intelligence, building multimodal AGI systems that understand and generate content across video, images, audio, and language. This isn't just a research endeavor; it's a full-stack engineering challenge that requires innovation in training systems, inference, product architecture, and the crucial feedback loops connecting them. As a Staff Software Engineer, Product, you will be positioned at the very foundation of this technological wave, contributing to the development of the core models themselves, rather than simply wrapping existing APIs.
- • Our mission extends beyond incremental improvements. We are developing models that have the potential to replace entire categories of software and enable entirely new ones. Luma Labs is recognized as a leading multimodal AI research lab, having already developed one of the world's most advanced video generation models, Ray-3.14. We are now pushing the boundaries further, moving towards the next generation of multimodal general intelligence models.
- • We operate at a scale that few companies can match, backed by significant compute resources and a $900M Series C funding round, enabling us to support frontier research. Our primary focus is the creative domain, where multimodal systems can deliver immediate and tangible real-world impact. A key aspect of our work involves shipping tightly integrated products that transform groundbreaking research into practical tools that creators can readily use.
- • This is an opportunity to join us in the early stages, where the playbook is still being written. In such an environment, a single exceptional engineer can significantly reshape how the company operates and defines its future. We are seeking senior engineers who recognize that the landscape of software development has fundamentally changed. The era of solely human-driven code implementation is evolving, with AI making implementation significantly more accessible. The primary constraint now lies in decision-making: what to build, what not to build, where to establish boundaries, and which problems warrant structured solutions versus those that should remain flexible.
- • With the advent of AI tools, weak decisions can compound rapidly, and speed amplifies both clarity and errors. Therefore, we need technical leaders with exceptional judgment – engineers who can effectively direct AI to move at high velocity while making disciplined choices regarding scope, structure, and trade-offs. This role is less about writing more code and more about strategically deciding where code should exist and how it should be architected.
- • Your responsibilities will encompass the critical decisions that shape overall velocity. This includes translating ambiguous goals into clear, actionable technical direction, discerning when to invest in robust structure and when to maintain a lightweight approach, and actively preventing unnecessary complexity from infiltrating the system. You will be instrumental in aligning product intent with technical realities and educating others on how to leverage AI tools effectively without leading to overbuilding.
- • While AI can generate solutions for any prompt, it cannot determine which problems are most worth solving. That crucial responsibility falls to you. The ideal candidate will possess deep technical judgment, encompassing system design, architecture, and security, coupled with strong product intuition, including an understanding of user needs, prioritization, and user experience.
- • What is non-negotiable is your ability to be world-class at directing AI agents to achieve tangible product and engineering outcomes, and at guiding the technical direction for a team operating at high speed. You will be responsible for directing AI coding agents to build production systems rapidly, while upholding discipline in system design, ownership, and real-world behavior. You will make critical decisions about what to build and, importantly, what not to build, as implementation costs decrease.
- • You will set the technical direction across engineering, defining system boundaries, data models, ownership structures, and operational expectations. In partnership with design and research, you will co-own product direction, shaping both the 'what' and the 'how' of our development. You will be expected to make and defend difficult trade-offs between speed, reliability, complexity, and extensibility, and to shape the architecture early in the development lifecycle before decisions become rigid constraints. You will own critical outcomes end-to-end, from initial problem framing through deployment and iterative improvement.
- • Furthermore, you will be tasked with raising the bar for technical depth, judgment, and production ownership within the team. You will prevent avoidable complexity from accumulating as iteration speed increases and mentor engineers on the effective use of AI tools while maintaining engineering rigor. Identifying and eliminating recurring classes of design mistakes before they scale will be a key contribution. You will also design systems and workflows that empower small teams to achieve outsized impact, attract exceptional engineers, and help them grow into high-judgment technical leaders, ultimately increasing team velocity without adding operational or conceptual overhead.
🎯 Requirements
- • 8+ years of experience building and shipping production software.
- • Proven track record of leading multiple non-trivial projects, owning technical direction and execution end-to-end.
- • Demonstrated experience making high-stakes technical decisions that materially impacted a system or product.
- • Fluency with AI coding tools and practical experience using them to ship real functionality in production or substantial side projects.
- • Strong technical depth (system design, distributed systems, security, infrastructure) OR strong product intuition (user empathy, prioritization, UX), with a strong preference for candidates possessing both.
🏖️ Benefits
- • Competitive base salary range: $230,000 - $360,000 per year.
- • Opportunity to work at the cutting edge of multimodal AI and AGI development.
- • Significant impact on shaping the future of AI-native software development and product strategy.
- • Collaborative and innovative work environment with a focus on frontier research and product integration.
- • Chance to mentor and grow with a team of exceptional engineers and technical leaders.
