- • Gevo Inc. is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Substation Physical Engineer/Designer to join our dynamic team. This remote position plays a crucial role in supporting Electrical Substation Project Engineers by developing comprehensive and accurate drawing packages for complex power delivery projects and proposals. You will be instrumental in shaping the physical infrastructure of High Voltage (HV) substations, including Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) and Air Insulated Switchgear (AIS) configurations, control buildings, and associated civil works.
- • Your primary responsibility will be to translate single-line diagrams and basic sketches into detailed 2D and 3D engineering drawings. This involves creating general arrangement drawings, plan views, elevations, equipment erection details, structural and electrical details, lightning protection systems, ground grid layouts, foundation designs, and tray/conduit/trough and duct bank drawings. A significant aspect of this role involves leveraging Building Information Modeling (BIM) strategies and processes, adhering to ISO-19650 standards and specific customer BIM requirements, utilizing tools like Revit to create and manage 3D models.
- • You will be expected to develop detailed bills of materials for all substation power equipment, HV connectors, conduit, troughing, and cable trays, ensuring accuracy and completeness. Close coordination and interface with other engineering disciplines, including Protection & Control (P&C), civil, and structural teams, will be essential to ensure seamless project execution and integration of designs.
- • This role requires a high degree of autonomy, with the ability to complete complex drawing packages with minimal supervision. You will also be responsible for performing design calculations related to battery sizing, DC system component selection, control and power cable sizing and rating, bus sizing, fitting selection, insulator selection, ground grid design, and lightning protection. Adherence to established quality procedures and standard design processes is paramount.
- • A key part of your contribution will be to actively participate in and drive the development and evolution of regional BIM models and processes. This includes contributing to BIM execution plans, defining use cases, setting up and working within a Common Data Environment (CDE), managing 3D model collaboration (both internal and external), conducting 3D model auditing, participating in clash detection meetings and generating reports, and exploring advanced applications like virtual construction, design and constructability reviews, augmented reality, and georeferencing. You will also be involved in IFC exchanges and driving standardization of tools and design practices across the team.
- • You will be responsible for updating senior engineers and Project Managers (PMs) with accurate job completion estimates and regular status updates, ensuring transparency and efficient project tracking. A thorough review of your own work and the work of your colleagues will be expected to maintain the highest standards of quality and accuracy.
- • The projects you will be involved in span a diverse range, including substations for utilities, data centers, and renewable energy initiatives, offering a broad and engaging scope of work. Your ability to adapt to various customer standards and maintain a customer-focused approach will be critical to success.
- • This role demands a proactive and organized individual with excellent communication skills, capable of producing clear, concise, and easily understandable documentation. Prior experience in field installation and construction, as well as working within a quality assurance framework in a schedule-driven project environment, will be highly beneficial.
