Full Job Description

đź“‹ Description

  • • Own the technical vision and execution for Speechify’s Chrome Extension and Web Core Product, the gateway through which 50 million learners, professionals, and educators turn any text into instant audio. You will lead a cross-functional squad of 4-8 engineers, designers, and product managers who ship weekly to a global user base that grows by the hour.
  • • Architect and deliver end-to-end features that span the browser extension, web app, and shared JavaScript/TypeScript libraries. Recent examples include real-time voice-switching, offline caching of 100k-word documents, and a new “study mode” that synchronizes highlights between audio and text. Your fingerprints will be on every critical decision—from WebAssembly audio pipelines to IndexedDB storage strategies.
  • • Drive the product roadmap alongside PM and Design. You will translate ambiguous user pain points into technical specs, size epics, and sequence releases so that the team is always working on the highest-impact bets. Expect to present trade-offs to founders and execs in concise, data-driven memos.
  • • Champion code quality, performance, and accessibility. Establish lint rules, CI workflows, and automated testing (unit, e2e, visual regression) that keep velocity high without accruing tech debt. You will personally review every PR, mentor mid-level engineers, and run weekly “lunch-and-learns” on topics like Web Audio API best practices.
  • • Instrument everything. Define KPIs (time-to-first-audio, extension install→first-play funnel, crash-free sessions) and build dashboards in Amplitude or Mixpanel. When metrics dip, you dive deep—profiling memory leaks, optimizing bundle size, or A/B testing new onboarding flows.
  • • Collaborate with AI Research and Backend teams to surface new voices, smarter summarization, and multi-language support. You will integrate gRPC or REST endpoints, negotiate caching layers, and ensure that client-side inference runs smoothly on low-end Chromebooks.
  • • Be the voice of the customer. Join user interviews, read every App Store review, and dog-food the product daily. If a teacher in rural New Mexico can’t get her PDF to play, you feel it—and you swarm the fix.
  • • Foster a remote-first culture of psychological safety. Run daily stand-ups across time zones, celebrate wins in Slack, and give candid feedback that helps teammates level up. You will also help recruit: source, interview, and close senior engineers who are excited to work on a mission-driven product.
  • • Ship fast, but ethically. Balance speed with privacy (GDPR, COPPA) and security (CSP, OAuth, manifest v3 migration). You will lead threat-modeling sessions and ensure every release passes automated OWASP scans.
  • • Own the operational playbook. When AWS has an outage or Chrome pushes a breaking change, you are the calm commander who spins up incident bridges, drafts post-mortems, and turns chaos into process improvements.

🎯 Requirements

  • • 6+ years of production JavaScript/TypeScript experience, including 2+ years leading a team that shipped a consumer-facing web or browser-extension product to at least 1 M users
  • • Deep expertise in modern web stacks: React 18, Next.js, Webpack/Vite, service workers, IndexedDB, Web Audio API, and Chrome Extension manifest v3
  • • Demonstrated ability to translate product strategy into technical architecture, write detailed RFCs, and deliver on aggressive quarterly OKRs
  • • Strong communication skills—comfortable presenting to founders, writing concise tech specs, and mentoring engineers across time zones
  • • Nice-to-have: experience with WebAssembly, real-time audio processing, or building accessible WCAG 2.1 compliant interfaces

🏖️ Benefits

  • • Fully remote, async-first culture—work from Rio Rancho, ReykjavĂk, or anywhere with Wi-Fi; we cover co-working or home-office stipend
  • • Competitive salary + meaningful equity in a fast-growing, profitable company backed by A16Z and Google Ventures
  • • Annual $3 k learning budget for courses, conferences, or books—plus one paid trip to our optional team retreat in Costa Rica
  • • Flexible PTO (minimum 20 days) and quarterly mental-health weeks where the entire company powers down
