Full Job Description
đź“‹ Description
- • Join Canonical as an Ubuntu Software Engineer and become a core contributor to the world’s most popular open-source operating system, used daily by millions of developers, enterprises, researchers, and innovators across the globe. You will work on the full stack of Ubuntu—from kernel patches and low-level system libraries to cloud images, snap packages, and desktop applications—ensuring that every line of code you ship reaches users within days and shapes the future of computing.
- • Own end-to-end feature delivery for critical Ubuntu components, taking ideas from design discussions and RFCs through implementation, automated testing, code review, CI/CD, and production release. You will collaborate with distributed teams across time zones using GitHub, Launchpad, Matrix, and Miro, writing clean, maintainable Python, Go, C, and Rust while following rigorous engineering standards and open-source best practices.
- • Drive performance, security, and reliability improvements across the Ubuntu ecosystem. Profile bottlenecks in the kernel, systemd, snapd, or cloud-init; harden packages against supply-chain attacks; and craft automated regression tests that run on every pull request. Your work will directly influence the stability of Ubuntu on AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, Oracle Cloud, and bare-metal servers powering AI training clusters, high-frequency trading platforms, and IoT fleets.
- • Design and maintain the build, test, and release pipelines that keep Ubuntu moving at DevOps speed. You will extend Launchpad, PPA, and snapcraft infrastructure, integrate with GitHub Actions, and champion reproducible builds so that every binary can be traced back to source. Expect to debug arcane compiler flags, glibc quirks, and cross-architecture issues on x86_64, ARM64, RISC-V, and s390x.
- • Collaborate with upstream communities—Linux kernel, GNOME, Kubernetes, OpenStack, and more—to land patches, advocate Ubuntu’s needs, and ensure seamless integration. You will represent Canonical at conferences, write technical blog posts, and mentor new contributors, amplifying Ubuntu’s voice in the global open-source conversation.
- • Contribute to Ubuntu’s long-term roadmap by analyzing telemetry, user feedback, and market trends. You will prototype next-generation features such as confidential computing support, immutable desktop variants, or AI-optimized container runtimes, then shepherd them from alpha to LTS inclusion.
- • Provide world-class developer experience for the thousands of engineers who build snaps, charms, and cloud images on Ubuntu. Improve documentation, SDKs, and tooling so that packaging an application becomes as simple as git push. Your empathy for developers will shape CLI ergonomics, error messages, and IDE integrations.
- • Participate in Canonical’s twice-yearly engineering sprints in vibrant cities like Montreal, Berlin, Cape Town, or Singapore. These in-person gatherings blend strategic planning with hackathons, lightning talks, and cultural exploration, forging lifelong friendships across continents.
- • Uphold Ubuntu’s commitment to diversity, accessibility, and ethical technology. You will review code for inclusivity, champion accessibility standards, and ensure that Ubuntu remains free and open for everyone, everywhere.
