📋 Description

• As an Underwriting Consultant at The Guardian Life Insurance Company of America, you will serve as a senior technical expert in life underwriting, adjudicating the most complex and high-value cases while ensuring decisions align with underwriting guidelines, mortality expectations, and regulatory compliance. Your expertise will directly impact customer experience, risk management, and the adoption of innovative underwriting technologies, making you a pivotal force in maintaining Guardian’s competitive, customer-centric, and ethically grounded underwriting practices.
• Day to day, you will: adjudicate complex individual life underwriting cases including high-dollar and appeals; provide expert guidance on escalated issues for peers and management; apply deep reinsurance knowledge to evaluate treaty requirements and facultative placements; partner with Distribution and Field leadership to support producers and strengthen relationships; maintain current knowledge of underwriting guidelines, risk methodologies, and regulatory changes; champion the adoption of modern tools like automated underwriting platforms, EHR integration, and GenAI; troubleshoot systemic underwriting challenges across the team; mentor and train junior underwriters in advanced case handling and digital tool utilization; monitor industry trends in wearables, behavioral economics, and data analytics to inform business decisions; and collaborate with transformation specialists and managers to implement underwriting innovation initiatives.

🎯 Requirements

• Specialized depth and breadth of expertise in individual life underwriting, including authority on complex and high-dollar cases.
• Proven ability to adopt and champion technology-enabled solutions, leveraging automated underwriting platforms and data-driven tools.
• Demonstrated experience working within reinsurance frameworks, including interpreting treaty language, understanding retention limits, and applying automatic and facultative reinsurance rules.
• Familiarity with emerging technologies such as Electronic Health Records (EHR), GenAI, wearable technology, and behavioral economics concepts.
• Familiarity with quality control programs like Random Holdouts (RHO) and Post-Issue Audits (PIA), and applying analytics for continuous improvement.
• Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills, with the ability to adapt precedent and develop innovative approaches.
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills, capable of influencing peers and supporting leadership.
