Full Job Description

📋 Description

  • • Own the end-to-end validation roadmap for Waymo’s autonomous driving operations, translating cutting-edge research into scalable, real-world testing programs that directly accelerate the path to fully self-driving vehicles.
  • • Partner with engineering, product, safety, and field operations teams to define what “good” looks like for every new feature—then design the data-collection campaigns, simulation suites, and on-road test matrices that prove it.
  • • Build and maintain a living validation playbook: KPI trees, risk matrices, statistical power analyses, and scenario libraries that let stakeholders see at a glance how close each capability is to launch readiness.
  • • Drive the daily rhythm of validation execution: schedule test vehicles, allocate test-driver crews, negotiate city permits, and orchestrate nightly regression runs in simulation so that feedback loops stay under 24 hours.
  • • Distill terabytes of raw log data into crisp, decision-ready narratives for VPs and directors; your dashboards and weekly read-outs will determine whether a feature ships, gets iterated, or is rolled back.
  • • Continuously optimize cost-per-mile and time-per-validation-mile by identifying automation opportunities—everything from synthetic data generation to ML-driven triage of disengagements.
  • • Lead cross-functional war-room sessions when a critical safety or performance regression is detected; coordinate root-cause analysis, containment actions, and retest plans across hardware, software, and operations teams.
  • • Champion a culture of rigorous experimentation: mentor junior TPMs and data scientists on experiment design, statistical rigor, and the ethical implications of testing on public roads.
  • • Translate regulatory and legal requirements into concrete test protocols, ensuring every validation campaign meets or exceeds federal, state, and municipal standards.
  • • Manage vendor and partner relationships—sensor suppliers, mapping providers, and third-party logistics firms—negotiating contracts that give Waymo flexibility while controlling spend.
  • • Forecast validation demand 6–12 months ahead, aligning headcount, vehicle build schedules, and compute budgets so that the program never becomes the bottleneck.
  • • Spearhead post-mortems and retrospectives after each major launch, codifying lessons learned into reusable templates and automated checklists that raise the bar for future programs.

🎯 Requirements

  • • 5+ years of technical program or product management experience in autonomous systems, robotics, or safety-critical software environments.
  • • Proven track record of designing and executing large-scale validation or testing campaigns involving real-world hardware, simulation, and statistical analysis.
  • • Deep fluency in data-driven decision making—SQL, Python, or equivalent tools for extracting, analyzing, and visualizing complex datasets.
  • • Demonstrated ability to influence without authority across engineering, operations, legal, and executive stakeholders.
  • • Nice-to-have: advanced degree in robotics, systems engineering, or applied statistics; experience with regulatory frameworks (FMVSS, ISO 26262, SOTIF); familiarity with cloud-scale compute orchestration (Kubernetes, GCP, AWS).

🏖️ Benefits

  • • Competitive salary plus equity that directly ties your impact to Waymo’s long-term success.
  • • Comprehensive health, dental, vision, and mental-wellness coverage for you and your family from day one.
  • • 20+ days of PTO, unlimited sick leave, and a recharge week each December to ensure you actually unplug.
  • • Annual learning stipend, on-site fitness facilities, and commuter benefits including free EV charging at all California offices.
